The Quiet Enemy: Stories | Cecil Dawkins
27 posts | 2 read | 11 to read
In seven stories set in the rural South and West, Cecil Dawkins displays her remarkable talent for getting beneath the surface of ordinary lives and revealing their foibles and idiosyncrasies. An old deaf woman is kidnapped by a stranger she takes to be the devil; an atom bomb is tested in the Arizona desert; a man shoots a housebreaker dead; a son comes home for a funeral; a child disappears; a boy has his faith destroyed; a parched, money-grubbing man meets a woman no less hard. From these occasions Dawkins distills strong, rich stories. Dawkins writes about people not sharply aware of their own motives or the sources of their emotions--people blinkered by life in remote places or by lack of good fortune. The remarkable power of her stories comes from the way she can express so much through characters who themselves can express little. She does it by her brilliant evocation of background and the truthfulness of her observation, and by her gift of compassionate understanding, which demolishes the distances between people.

Pickpick

Cecil Dawkins, born and raised in Alabama, was a contemporary, admirer, and mentee of sorts to Flannery O'Connor. But her stories in this collection are not referential or expected. With a sharp intuition, Dawkins creates characters that are wholly unique and intensely human—predictably unpredictable. I didn't like every story, but there was something so intriguing about the acute storytelling that kept me reading and left me thinking.

MrBook Love the review and the pic! 7y
saresmoore @MrBook Thank you! 7y

Moray_Reads Sounds interesting, great review! Love your colourful picture, and the crochet. It's been months since I picked up my hooks 😕 7y
saresmoore @britt_brooke Thanks! Reviewing short story collections is tricky. 7y
saresmoore @Moray_Reads Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. I had been in a crochet slump until I found something I really wanted to make. It can be so satisfying to do a project start to finish. 7y
Cinfhen Great review, beautiful photo 💙💚💙 7y
saresmoore @Cinfhen 😘💞 7y
LeahBergen Wonderful review (and a cute little fox dish)! 7y
saresmoore @LeahBergen I never know what I'll find in that little fox dish. Elliott likes to sneak in and deposit random tiny items. It's always a nice surprise. 😊 7y
Yournewfriendsams Love this picture 🙌🏽 7y
Suet624 You made that sweet little crochet doo-hickey??? How lovely. (edited) 7y
saresmoore @Suet624 It's a bookmark and I'm supposed to starch it, but I've never gotten around to figuring out how to starch something without buying a can of starch. It's pretty flimsy! 7y
Suet624 Starch is so old-timey, isn't it? But I can see why you'd need it. It sure is pretty. 💕💕 7y
shawnmooney Great review – I want to pull my copy off the shelf and compare notes with you about which stories we each liked. I didn't like all of them, but the ones I liked I pretty much adored! 7y
saresmoore @shawnmooney I would love to compare notes. I'm finding that some of her quirky characters are really sticking with me, although I'm already beginning to forget what became of some of them. 7y
Hobbinol Gaw! I can't believe how far behind I got with one of my favorite litsiers. 😬 7y
saresmoore @Hobbinol Whatever have you been doing—real life living?! 7y
Hobbinol I rectum... (that's "I reckon" in cheeky southern malapropism). 7y
saresmoore 🤣 @Hobbinol You're a real gem, you know that? 7y

From the story "Hummers in the Larkspur"

These stories aren't polished and some meander a bit, but Dawkins' character descriptions are exceptional.

LeahBergen Hmm... what colour should I take? 🤔 I'm going with green! 7y
saresmoore @LeahBergen And to truly follow Nathaly's example, you must also take your wardrobe to a tailor to have green accents added to each item and then become unequivocally opinionated based solely on opposing every opinion of one person you particularly dislike. 😆 7y
LeahBergen That may complicate my life a bit! 😂 7y

Cecil Dawkins' short story, "The Mourner" came first, but I'm reminded of Ali Smith's word wizardry here.

@Lindy , have you read this collection?

MrBook Ooh, I like this. 7y
saresmoore @MrBook Isn't it fun? Her characters are all over the place, but I like this guy, Gabriel & his contemplative wordsmithing. 7y
Lindy I've got a copy, courtesy of @shawnmooney , but I've not yet dipped into it. Soon, I hope! 7y
saresmoore @Lindy I think you'll like it. It's unexpected. 7y

I'm thoroughly enjoying the second story in this this collection on a stormy evening. Dawkins has quite a fascinating way with words. I want to be her friend.

Not pictured: Princess Elliott in a crown and ballet slippers, because every day is #TiaraTuesday. 👸🏻

shawnmooney Oooooh, is that the one with the characters Jimmy and her husband Burt the Trader? If so, that was probably my favorite in the book! 7y
saresmoore @shawnmooney Yes! Good memory! It was weirdly wonderful, with tangents into meta reflection and characters described so vividly to begin with, then left undeveloped. The story felt unfinished, but I suppose that's the only way it could have been, given the subject matter. Her quirky descriptions and long sentences are reminding me of Elspeth Barker a bit. (edited) 7y

andrew61 I've not heard of this author but it looks very good, more book hunting! 7y
saresmoore @andrew61 She's a wonderful writer with a really unique storytelling style. She was a friend & contemporary of (and more or less mentored by) Flannery O'Connor. Her writing is based mostly in the American South (Georgia) & Southwest (New Mexico). 7y
Hobbinol Reading on a stormy night is the best!⛈⚡️👍🏻 7y

"...old sounds remembered from time before the pebbles lodged in her ears. But she could not heed the sounds now, because of that web of troubling that had spun itself out in her. So, in silence, she rocked."

This passage is gorgeous, original but also so familiar to me that it sharpens my own memories. I think Cecil and I are going to get along swimmingly!

LauraBeth This is beautiful! 7y
saresmoore @LauraBeth The rest of the story gets wonderfully weird, but this bit reminded me of sitting on my Memommy's porch in Greenville, GA. 7y
shawnmooney Many of the stories in this collection were among the best I've read in years and years and years! ❤❤ 7y
saresmoore @shawnmooney I just read the first one today, but it was perfectly paced, just strange enough, and so satisfying! 7y

I never know what to say about short story collections, so I've been postponing reviewing this book, which I read back in August 2016. Cecil Dawkins - a woman, born in Alabama, still living at the age of 90 in New Mexico, and a close friend of Flannery O'Connor - published this collection in 1963. Around half of the stories here were completely stunning, as good as any I've read in years. I want to read more by her.

saresmoore I was going to ask if you had read this on my most recent post. Of course you have! I've been reading up on some of her correspondence and friendship with Flannery and I'm finding it all very diverting. 7y

There's a philosophy bookstore at Koenji in Tokyo - all the books inside are in Nihongo, but they have a large shelf of English books outside for cheap. Got this one for a dollar!
