An instant classic for fans of Peace Like a River and Jim the Boy: when two hardscrabble young boys think theyve committed a crime, they flee into the Northwoods of Wisconsin. Will the adults trying to find and protect them reach them before its too late? Its the summer of 1994 in Claypot, Wisconsin, and the lives of ten-year-old Fischer Fish Branson and Dale Bread Breadwin are shaped by the two fathers they dont talk about. One night, tired of seeing his best friend bruised and terrorized by his no-good dad, Fish takes action. A gunshot rings out and the two boys flee the scene, believing themselves murderers. They head for the woods, where they find their way onto a raft, but the natural terrors of Ironsforge gorge threaten to overwhelm them. Four adults track them into the forest, each one on a journey of his or her own. Sheriff Cal, whos having doubts about a life in law enforcement; Tiffany, a purple-haired gas station attendant and poet looking for connection; Fishs mother Miranda, full of fierce faith; and his granddad, Teddy, who knows the woods like the back of his hand. The adults track the boys toward the novels heart-pounding climax on the edge of the gorge and a conclusion that beautifully makes manifest the grace these characters find in the wilderness and one another. This timeless story of loss, hope, and adventure runs like the river itself amid the vividly rendered landscape of the Upper Midwest.

It was fine but I‘m not the reader for this. An adventure story about two young fatherless boys. A bit wilderness survival story, which I do love, but heavy on the cheese factor. The adults could have been hallmark movie characters 😬
I did like the setting and I liked the way the kids dealt with hardship…the adults is what I struggled with here. It felt like a “gentle read” or verging on Christian fiction.

This survival story went on just a bit too long and none of the characters were very fleshed out. Not bad, just not great.

Believing they‘ve killed someone, best friends Fish & Bread (who are ten) run away & disappear into the woods. The sheriff, the mother & grandfather of one of the boys, & a local waitress set out after them confronting their own fears, doubts, & nature as they race to find the boys before an even greater disaster occurs. This is a solid debut about choices & consequences, friendship & family & how far we go to protect the ones we love.

The story of 2 boys who run away after firing a shot at an abusive father.

Adventure, determination, a little bit of a love story.

'Raft of Stars' was entertaining, but will soon be forgotten.

Two young boys go on the run into the Wisconsin wilderness after believing themselves to have committed a serious crime. Several people are searching for them in the hopes they don‘t come to sorrow. This was good. The stories of each character were interesting and the boys were believably written children.

I‘m not a big adventure reader, but upon learning that kids were the central characters, I wanted to give it a try. I wasn‘t disappointed! This was adventure with purpose and suspense. I also enjoyed that the author provided a bit of comic relief to break the drama a bit. He also did a good job of capturing the nature of a child‘s ability to call on pretend to ease the pain. Thanks to #NetGalley for my very first #arc

So, this is my first #ARC and I‘m loving it. Not sure I‘ll get anymore arcs since I don‘t have a blog, but I‘m super excited about my first one. #netgalley

CoffeeK8 Hey I just started doing NetGalley too. And I don‘t have a blog either. I‘m interested to see how many I end up getting. I‘ve gotten 12 so far and I find checking the Publisher Approval Preferences and then requesting from ones that don‘t require a blog, just a review helps. 3y
Tattooedteacher @CoffeeK8 Wow! 12 is amazing. I did go back and take a look at my profile and spruced it up a bit. That's helped. I had three audio books approved and three ebooks approved. I've read two and want to be able to provide good feedback but I'm at a loss for what's important to say (which is unusual for me?) 😁 (edited) 3y
CoffeeK8 @Tattooedteacher I just go with a sentence or two in summary and then what would make me want to read the book. I aim for 2 paragraphs tops. 3y
Tattooedteacher @CoffeeK8 OK. Thank you. 3y
