Strangely enchanting.

Based in an interstellar, possibly extraterrestrial, sci-fi world - this modern classic showcased four small (and engrossing) works by an author I hadn‘t known about.

The stories are memorable. But there‘s a strong ephemeral quality to them. Like star dust, these stories make their presence felt, but in an obscure way. They seem to exist in our universe, but are completely disconnected from reality.

The 29th in a 50 penguin classics box set expedition I set for myself last year (2022) which i accidentally began reading backwards. My first try at Italo Calvino. Well it‘s science fiction with fantasy, two genres that I tend to run away from haha but I did find them strange and fascinating. The weird cosmic facts mingled with love stories was a unique blend. Not for me per se but I‘m sure lovers of either or both genres will enjoy it!

Two things read in the past hour that bring me joy:
-Thunberg's burn of Trump, nearly a year in the making
-Calvino's essay Why Read the Classics? I'd read excerpts of this before, but never the entire piece which is actually fairly short. A lot of great passages in this one, will definitely be visiting it again:

twohectobooks That Why Read the Classics essay is one of my favourites of all time. I‘m glad I saved it because they hide it behind a paywall sometimes! (edited) 3y

TsundokuAleax I love that cover of Pride and Prejudice. I debated between getting that one and a cloth hardcover, which won out this year. 7y

"We fell into a special mood on those nights off the Zinc Cliffs: gay, but with a touch of suspense, as if inside our skulls, instead of the brain, we felt a fish, floating, attracted by the Moon." - from the story The Distance of the Moon
