Mehso-so

I just didn‘t appreciate the author of this book. She travels around #laos, #vietnam and #cambodia in 1990, before mass tourism. Her sole intention is to write this book but the above quote pretty much sums up her attitude.

She has to be escorted by various government guides and dislikes them all, resents spending small amounts of money despite the appalling poverty and has a very supercilious attitude.

I did learn a bit of history though. ⬇️

squirrelbrain If I haven‘t completely put you off (!) I can send this book out for #swapme. You never know - you might love it! It fits for 3 different countries on #readingasia2021. 3y
TrishB It was an honest review 👍🏻 3y
BarbaraBB If the quote is representative for the book I‘d be annoyed too! Are you going to use it for all three of them? You‘re really kickstarting this! 3y

squirrelbrain I‘m using this for #cambodia as I have other (hopefully better!) books for the other 2 countries. @BarbaraBB (edited) 3y
squirrelbrain That observation was really near the end of the book @BarbaraBB but totally summed up my feelings. She just didn‘t seem to have a plan about what she wanted to convey in the book, so it ended up not being about the sights but also not about the people either, as she was almost colonial in her attitude to ‘poor‘ people. 3y
BarbaraBB I do need a book for Cambodia too but I am almost sure I won‘t like this book either so I think I wait til another book for Cambodia comes up! 3y
Graywacke Whoa. (I‘ll pass on the swap offer. 😁) 3y
Librarybelle Yikes! Great review, though! 3y
Megabooks 🙄🙄🙄 3y
rockpools Eek. I might give it a miss - I‘d assumed it was WAY earlier than 1990 from your description 😬 3y
