The Baby Is Mine
The Baby Is Mine: Quick Reads | Oyinkan Braithwaite
7 posts | 9 read | 6 to read
When his girlfriend throws him out during the pandemic, Bambi has to go to his Uncle's house in lock-down Lagos. He arrives during a blackout, and is surprised to find his Aunty Bidemi sitting in a candlelit room with another woman. They both claim to be the mother of the baby boy, fast asleep in his crib. At night Bambi is kept awake by the baby's cries, and during the days he is disturbed by a cockerel that stalks the garden. There is sand in the rice. A blood stain appears on the wall. Someone scores tribal markings into the baby's cheeks. Who is lying and who is telling the truth?

Nowhere near as good as My Sister, the Serial Killer but still a good quick read. I flew through it in one night. Set during the pandemic Bambi goes to live with two women who both claim the baby in the house is theirs. One review says it‘s ‘domestic noir‘ and I love that description! It fits it well.

batsy Ooh! I enjoyed My Sister and I'll have to check this out. 13mo
Megabooks I‘m going to look for this! Worth a borrow probably. 👍🏻 13mo

Short and interesting. A covid lockdown story set in Lagos where womanizer Bambi is in a house with 2 women both claiming to be mother to the same baby. Weird sh*t ensues. Tense, confusing, interesting setting outside my wheelhouse, but nowhere near her amazing first novel My Sister the Serial Killer.
Well written though so will keep an eye on this author!

The story about some serious themes (motherhood, misogyny, Covid 19) are dealt in a lighter, humorous style, similar to that in her previous book My Sister the Serial Killer. The narrator is unlikeable (but still in some ways kind-hearted) Bambi, who finds himself trapped in a house with a baby and 2 women, each claiming that the baby is hers. Fine, entertaining story set in #Nigeria was OK companion for shorter hike.

BarbaraBB I didn‘t know she had a new book out! Good to know. And your doggie is so cute 🥰 3y
Simona @BarbaraBB It was published for the Quick Read Project https://readingagency.org.uk/adults/quick-guides/quick-reads/ On behalf of Fiona - thank you 😘 She is cute mischievous energetic little bomb 😁 3y
shawnmooney Simona! I keep missing your posts - because of the time difference, probably. Glad I‘ve just looked you up to catch up. I‘d love to have you on my Bite-sized Book Chats series (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLU-61cZp1pQdBH5V0Zb9q-2ujl4PY8nhf) to talk about this book. What do you think? 💕 2y
Simona @shawnmooney I'm very honored, but I have to say no. I am very camera-shy, my speaking English is not fluent, and in situations like this, I find it hard to collect and express my thoughts … but I am enjoying your content - constantly raising bar on the BookTube, and I must say that you are very excellent interviewer. If I change my mind, I‘ll let you know 🤗 2y

My second book by Braithwaite and once again she really got me. This was the first book I read which directly involves the COVID crisis, and it's the perfect setting for Braithwaites characters. It's all tense, suspicions rise and the intensity between the characters gets stronger and stronger. A short, but hefty read!

Aren't I the luckiest? This novella seems to be coming May 2021 but has just recently been, exclusively, published in Spanish.

Thoughts? I disliked (I wish I could say dislike is a strong word but it isn't...) this for a number of reasons and I'm really looking forward to discussing when this is out in English. Maybe then I'll have more material from Braithwaite herself to be able to understand what I maybe just didn't get? 🤷
