The Seed of Compassion
The Seed of Compassion: Lessons from the Life and Teachings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama | His Holiness the Dalai Lama
4 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
For the first time ever, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate His Holiness the Dalai Lama addresses children directly, sharing lessons of peace and compassion, told through stories of his own childhood. One of today's most inspiring world leaders was once an ordinary child named Lhamo Thondup. In a small village in Tibet, his mother was his first great teacher of compassion. In everyday moments from his childhood, young readers begin to see that important lessons are all around us, and that they, too, can grow to truly understand them. With simple, powerful text, the Dalai Lama shares the universalist teachings of treating one another with compassion, which Bao Luu illustrates beautifully in vibrant color. In an increasingly confusing world, The Seed of Compassion offers guidance and encouragement on how we all might bring more kindness to it.

4 ⭐Reading this book feels like the Dalai Lama is talking to you telling a story of his past, and hopes for the future. He states that compassion is the biggest lesson he can ever teach. And it‘s this lesson that needs to be foremost in everybody‘s mind. The one thing that separates us from others is our compassion. It‘s interesting, and it gives a look into a religious leader that speaks not about religion, but about caring for other people.

This has been on my list since it first came out & I‘m so glad I finally read it! I thought the text & illustrations captured the spirit of the Dalai Lama & certain moments were really special. For kids who practice Tibetan Buddhism or know about the Dalai Lama as a political figure I think this will be a powerful story. For kids going into this blind, I might skip some pages that were more about his history & less about the message of compassion.

#InspiredNewYear Day 7: There is #Tranquility when you plant the seeds of compassion. Told in the voice of His Holiness, I never felt that he was talking down to his young readers. And while he was ostensibly sharing life lessons on compassion and kindness, I did not feel that the story was particularly preachy nor didactic, even though of course it had that moral intent to teach virtues. TheKidUpstairs This is definitely one to read with my kids. We love reading books about kindness, compassion, gratitude, etc. 3y

I‘ve had the Dalaï Lama‘s books on my TBR for years, and still haven‘t read them, but I really need to! This nonfiction picture book is both a story of the Dalaï Lama for Little‘s, and gives such an important message (from a great teacher!) about the importance of compassion, and approaching someone - everyone - with true warmheartedness.

A GR Choice Award nomination this year, and my first book for #nonfiction2020 #nfn2020.
