Surviving Savannah
Surviving Savannah | Patti Callahan
It was called "The Titanic of the South." The luxury steamship sank in 1838 with Savannah's elite on board; through time, their fates were forgotten--until the wreck was found, and now their story is finally being told in this breathtaking novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Becoming Mrs. Lewis. When Savannah history professor Everly Winthrop is asked to guest-curate a new museum collection focusing on artifacts recovered from the steamship Pulaski, she's shocked. The ship sank after a boiler explosion in 1838, and the wreckage was just discovered, 180 years later. Everly can't resist the opportunity to try to solve some of the mysteries and myths surrounding the devastating night of its sinking. Everly's research leads her to the astounding history of a family of eleven who boarded the Pulaski together, and the extraordinary stories of two women from this family: a known survivor, Augusta Longstreet, and her niece, Lilly Dawson, who was never found, along with her child. These aristocratic women were part of Savannah's society, but when the ship exploded, each was faced with difficult and heartbreaking decisions. This is a moving and powerful exploration of what women will do to endure in the face of tragedy, the role fate plays, and the myriad ways we survive the surviving.

This is the story of the shipwreck of the Pulaski in 1838 and what the survivors went through until their rescue. It alternated timelines between 1838 and the present, when a museum curator is putting together an exhibit of the wreck. It‘s also about grief and how to survive the surviving.

Fascinating story of an 1838 shipwreck, and the harrowing conditions faced by the survivors. Dual timelines: the shipwreck itself, and the present-day museum curator who is preparing an exhibition of the artifacts and dealing with a personal tragedy of her own. Based on the true story of the steamboat Pulaski, which sank in 1838 and was recently discovered off the coast of North Carolina. Haunting.

1838, a family and others take a steamship up the coast towards cooler weather for the summer. Historically the steamship Pulaski sinks. Three timelines tell this story, past and present. It should have ended before the editor decided to retell us all of the information that we already covered. Good story but the present day timeline became too predictable.

This book is one of the ones that lingers past the time of snapping the book closed. It is a story that makes you miss the characters immediately, once you realize you won't reunite tomorrow.

This was a long book. It tells the story of the sinking of the Pulaski, and also follows a modern-day woman researching it. I was very impatient with the modern chapters, wanting to get through them and back to the ship and the survivors. Still, it was good, though like said, very long. Well, it felt long anyway.

I've been really excited to start this historical fiction about one of the worst maritime disasters in US history that I had never heard of until an episode of Exposition Unknown. A bit disappointed with how much present day narration we're starting off with since I wanted to dive right into the story of the Pulaski, but hopefully we'll get to that sooner rather than later.

kplovesbooks Well... it's going to go back and forth. The present day narration actually seemed more lengthy to me but that could be because I was bored with it. 🤦 I bailed at 38%. Hopefully you'll fare better!! 2y
rachelsbrittain @kplovesbooks yeah I can see why you might. I've gotten to the historical POV and I'm gonna give it a go, but definitely not starting off with as much promise as I hoped 🙈 2y

Okay, 38% and...I just can't. Let me be clear: it is me, not the book!! It's very well written. But it's a dual timeline book with a present day narrative and a narrative from the time period the ship sank in. It's the present day that has undone me. I just CAN'T with the doings of historical researcher people. All the shuffling through old papers and oohing over a lost relic....

Crazeedi Oh no! I just borrowed this from library 2y
kplovesbooks @Crazeedi No worries!! I'm convinced it's just me! 2y
Bren912 I went to return this and then re-read the intro. I‘m going to give it a whirl but you are not the first person to comment on the tedious present day writings. 2y
kplovesbooks @Bren912 🤷 Yes, very tedious. 2y

sharread Wow these are some amazing reads. I'm not interested in Spying on the South, but anyone of the 3 is good to me. 2y
mrsmarch I loooved Horowitz‘ Confederates in the Attic and would read Spying, especially since Olmstead is a well known personality here in Boston. Bayou Moon or Low Country would be my next votes. 2y
HeathHof These are awesome reads! So hard to choose but if I HAD to pick it would be either Low Country or Under the Bayou moon. I'd be happy to ready any of them though. 2y
sharread @mrsmarch I'm open to any one especially since you read the author and enjoyed it. 2y

There were times that I felt the story needed to move along a little faster but I did enjoy this book. My favorite part was the end of the book. Not because it was ending but because the lingering questions throughout the story were answered, each and every one, in great detail. There were numerous times I would see a line and think wow I can relate to that feeling or it gave me a new perspective on something happening in my own life.
