Words with Wings | Nikki Grimes
12 posts | 13 read | 7 to read
Gaby daydreams to tune out her parents arguments, but when her parents divorce and she begins a new school, daydreaming gets her into trouble. Her mother scolds her for it, her teacher keeps telling her to pay attention, and the other kids tease her...until she finds a friend who also daydreams and her teacher decides to work a daydreaming-writing session into every school day. With a notebook thick with daydreams, Gaby grows more confident about herself and her future. This verse novel poignantly celebrates the power of writing and the inspiration a good teacher can deliver.

A sweet little book of poetry, narrated by Gabby, a girl with a great imagination. Just the type of light book I need right now!

I added these books today to Goodreads as I read them for my class this semester. All were excellent and I highly recommend them. Books 138-147.

Proof that daydreaming is therapeutic! Loved this book🤗

wanderinglynn As a fellow daydreamer (who also used to get scolded for “having my head in the clouds”), this sounds like a lovely story. 5y

So good. A novel in verse, a daydreamer, a girl in love with words finding a way through her parents separation. Recommend.

Delightful story, told in verse, about a young girl who daydreams...endlessly. Her mother worries about her, her father, also a daydreamer, gets her but nobody else does. Gabby has moved to a new school and hopes to find a new friend and maybe a place where her dreams can take flight. A great MG read for anyone who loves to dream.

Alicia Beautiful cover!!! 6y
ravenlee Have you seen Judy Schachner's book (tagged)? It's a beautiful picture book with similar themes. 6y
TracyReadsBooks @ravenlee I haven‘t seen Sarabella‘s Thinking Cap. Thanks for bringing it to my attention! I‘ll definitely take a look. 6y

We continue to work through the library shelves. This cover caught my attention and the story definitely captured it (which is redundant I suppose but that‘s my current level of caffeination at work 😂). A short book about a girl who daydreams. Very good so far.

I enjoyed this poem by Nikki Grimes because many kids and adults can relate to what the author was going through even if it hasn't physically happened to them. #UCFWaltersLit

ojavier1974 Awww!!!that is reality for a lot of our future students.... 7y
CWalters #UCFWalterslit So... knowing it may hit home, would you use it in class? With what grade and in what context? Just wondering if you thought about it as a future teacher. 7y

Oh I do love a good verse novel. I like the YA and junior fiction ones better than the adult ones so far. How beautiful is this poem? What a lovely image it creates.
