The Last Piece
The Last Piece | Imogen Clark

A sudden departure. A story decades in the making. The chaotic but happy equilibrium of the Nightingale family is thrown into disarray when Cecily--whose children can't remember her ever being remotely spontaneous--disappears to a Greek island with no warning or explanation. Her reasons for doing something so out of character are a total mystery to her three daughters, high-powered executive Felicity, unfulfilled GP Julia and organised mother-of-five Lily. What connection could she possibly have with Kefalonia? But Cecily has gone to continue a story she thought ended decades ago--one that could have a huge impact on her family. And when she returns, she'll have to tell them the truth. Will Cecily be able to hold her family together once she reveals her big secret? And might she discover that she's not the only one with a story to tell?

Not t my usual book. There wasn't a serial killer or a murder😂 Family drama that was a quick read. Cecily has kept a secret from her girls all their lives
Now, she may have to tell them. It was okay, just not my usual read.

I completed my first #BookSpinBingo—right down the middle! I love the fact that the book I finished to give me that full row is called “The Last Piece.” 😂 AND, if I manage to finish Mudlark tomorrow, I‘ll have two bingos. 🎉 Thank you @TheAromaofBooks for such a fun monthly challenge. Now to compile next month‘s list!

MeganAnn Great job!! I haven‘t managed a bingo yet. 3y
TheAromaofBooks Yay!!!! Fantastic month!!! 3y
BarbaraJean @MeganAnn The numbers fell in good places for me this month, with two book club picks in the same row as my BookSpin and a free space. Last month nothing lined up! 3y

My husband got me a 3-month subscription to this book box last year, and I finally finished the last book! These are so fun—they include gifts to open at specific pages, which are related to the action in the story. The book kept me reading, but it wouldn‘t have been my pick. There were frustrating continuity errors throughout & I found the ending rather an odd choice. Not the best-written family saga, but still a decent way to spend a few hours.

MsMelissa I used to have that subscription box. I ended up cancelling. Loved the idea of it, and I enjoyed most of the books, but the gifts that came with the box were just not worth the price (keep in mind I‘m in Canada and with the US to Cdn $ conversion it was expensive). I now buy a Canadian book subscription box - the quality of the items included is 10x better. 3y
BarbaraJean @MsMelissa Totally understand! This box and the one previous had good stuff, but the first one not as much. I love the idea of items that go along with the story, but the book selections were only okay. That's what I've run into with book subscription boxes--often the book isn't one that I'd pick for myself. 3y

I found this book to be very predictable, which takes out the enjoyment out of reading for me. Whether I feel this way because of the amount of books I read, I‘m not sure. However I‘m sure some people will enjoy this book, but sadly it wasn‘t for me.

I loved many aspects of this book, though the ending was a bit sad for me.This author's ability to write about family dynamics was spot on.

I enjoyed the concept, but felt it was overhyped a little. My favorite part was getting to know each family member really well, while their side drama took away from what I was trying to determine was the book plot. I think I got the idea of the story as letting stuff go that doesn‘t want to be here. But not quite sure. Was quite a double-sides sword for me, so I‘m a bit unsatisfied. #onceuponabookclub #ouabc

I received this book with my Once Upon A Book Club box, while it wasn't something I would have chose, it ended up being really good. It was heartfelt and you felt the emotions with each character.

What struck me was how different everyone‘s lives are. Felicity, pretty sure oldest, has one preschool child she dotes complete over. She watches everything he does. It also seems the husband is off with another woman. Julia, one twin, single and trying to figure her place in life. Lily, other twin, mothers 5 boys. Knows she‘s not the brightest, but doesn‘t want to be a disappointment. love how diverse the whole family is #onceuponabookclub #ouabc

The Last Piece is a beautifully written complicated story of family that keeps you guessing through the first half of the book. It drove me crazy that I didn't know exactly what the secrets were but it's also the thing that made this book so interesting to read! Once I was finally clued in to what Cecily's mysterious trip is all about, I couldn't book the book down!

Imagine my surprise when I got the email this afternoon saying the book would be delivered today!! Without any notice it was even shipped in the first place! This sounds like a nice family story. Cecily, confusing her 3 daughters, acts out of place and disappears without warning to a Greek island. What family secret does she come back with? This feels like a Mama Mia moment. #onceuponabookclub

I‘m torn on “The Last Piece”. I by no means disliked it, but it just wasn‘t very memorable, I can‘t really put my finger on why. The story was a quick read that hit in some pretty serious topics, but I never felt connected to the characters and some of them were left without much of a conclusion. The suspense/mystery seems a bit forced and unnecessary at times. Overall a wonderful peak into an average family and the secrets we all keep close.

How would a happy family of 5 react if a half-sister/daughter contacted them 50 years after being given up for adoption?
I enjoyed this book because it told the story of lives that were messy and imperfect, it was full of surprises, and it didn‘t have the ending that one might expect. Very well-written with characters that you cared about and a heartbreaking backstory. I cheered for this family and was thoroughly engrossed in their story. 4.5/5⭐️
