Of Dragons, Feasts and Murders: A Dominion of the Fallen Story | Aliette de Bodard
4 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
From the author of the critically acclaimed Dominion of the Fallen trilogy comes a tale of dragons, and Fallen angelsand also kissing, sarcasm and stabbing. Lunar New Year should be a time for familial reunions, ancestor worship, and consumption of an unhealthy amount of candied fruit. But when dragon prince Thuan brings home his brooding and ruthless husband Asmodeus for the New Year, they find not interminable family gatherings, but a corpse outside their quarters. Asmodeus is thrilled by the murder investigation; Thuan, who gets dragged into the political plotting hed sworn off when he left, is less enthusiastic. Itll take all of Asmodeuss skill with knives, and all of Thuans diplomacy, to navigate this oneas well as the troubled waters of their own relationship.... A sparkling standalone book set in a world of dark intrigue. A Note on Chronology Spinning off from the Dominion of the Fallen series, which features political intrigue in Gothic devastated Paris, this book stands alone, but chronologically follows The House of Sundering Flames. Its High Gothic meets C-drama in a Vietnamese inspired worldperfect for fans of The Untamed, KJ Charles, and Roshani Chokshis The Gilded Wolves.

#TBRPile Day 21 - tea and chocolate makes my little English soul happy ☕️ A book set in a gothic post-apocalypse Paris with demons and angels and dragons? Sounds like my kind of book! 📚

This was great! It‘s part of the Dominion of the Fallen setting featuring Fallen Angels in a ruined Paris. However, this novella takes place in a Dragon Kingdom in the Seine, after the main trilogy. In it Thuan and Asmodeus end up trying to solve a murder while visiting Thuan‘s relations over Tet.

I really loved this, from the relationship between the more diplomatic Thuan and the “murder first” Asmodeus, to the Vietnamese inspired setting.

This feels - and I say this in tones of pure delight - like Dominion of the Fallen fanfic. My favourite queer couple get embroiled in a murder investigation and dragon kingdom politics. Cue romance and stabbing as the twin Heads of House Hawthorn renew their commitment to complicating one another's lives in the best possible way. Bonus content: Thuan's terrifying torture-grandma. Fab.

Scorbet It really is delightful, isn‘t it? (For values of delightful including murder and torture, of course. Asmodeus is in it, after all) 4y
imyril @Scorbet I feel weird describing a relationship that casually includes acidic mockery and recreational torture as cosy, but.... it‘s cosy 😉 I especially loved Thuan getting to grips with his privilege and the inequities of the dragon kingdom with the help of Asmodeus‘s sardonic commentary 4y
