Hardcore Zen
Hardcore Zen: Punk Rock, Monster Movies and the Truth About Reality | Brad Warner
4 posts | 13 read | 6 to read
This is not your typical Zen book. Brad Warner, a young punk who grew up to be a Zen master, spares no one. This bold new approach to the "Why?" of Zen Buddhism is as strongly grounded in the tradition of Zen as it is utterly revolutionary. Warner's voice is hilarious, and he calls on the wisdom of everyone from punk and pop culture icons to the Buddha himself to make sure his points come through loud and clear. As it prods readers to question everything, Hardcore Zen is both an approach and a departure, leaving behind the soft and lyrical for the gritty and stark perspective of a new generation. The subtitle says it all: there has never been a book like this.

Pickpick

Ok time for a non-fiction review. I'm skeptical as to whether Zen is actually "real" Buddhism (as in anywhere near close to what the original Buddha taught) but I thought this introduction into the mind of an irreverent "Zen Master" was raw and honest enough to convince me there is something of substance to this thing we call Buddhism, whatever that may be exactly. Or better yet. Enlightenment. What the HELL is that supposed to be anyway? ?

Mehso-so

Part memoir, part instructional/informational book about Zazen /Zen Buddhism, but it doesn't quite work for me. I think I would gladly read either a full out memoir or a non fiction book about Zen Buddhism by this author, but he was trying to do too much in too little space with this book & it feels scattered & not fully realized. Audiobook suffers from being amateurly done, with variable quality & shuffling paper noises in background. 2.5/5 stars

GlitteryOtters Part of what was so annoying was when there were visual components we were missing in audio, the author would describe them poorly, then say something like "you probably have to buy the book to get it". Well, DUH, I did buy the book, just on a non visual format. I hate when people act like an audiobook isn't the real book. It is even worse when the author narrates his own book & makes asides like that. Really, dude?! ☹️? 8y
Chessa Oh geez. That sounds really annoying and unfortunate. :( 8y
GlitteryOtters @Chessa yeah, I was bummed because the author is a good storyteller & great at explaining, but both the book just plain didn't work for me *and* I hated the slightly offhand treatment of audiobook as if it was only supposed to be a supplement to the physical book, not a complete book. I would read the heck out of a straight up memoir by this guy, though. He sounds like he's had a truly unusual & interesting life! 8y

Sue

I confess to have made some #24in48 blunders:
1. I thought my daughter would be with her dad this weekend
2. Discovering I can't count, I agreed to let her have a sleepover tonight as it was her birthday yesterday
3. I also agreed to take the three of them to a trampoline venue and lunch tomorrow.

Mayread Since you will clearly not be doing much reading this weekend, I offer you a CHALLENGE! Be the first person on Litsy to post a pic of reading while jumping on a trampoline! 8y
Sue @Skiles @BookishBron Challenge accepted!! 8y

BookishFeminist 😂😂 At least it sounds like you'll be having fun! 8y
readinginthedark You say all of this like it's a bad thing, but girls can entertain themselves while you read in a different room, right? :) 8y
Megabooks Sounds like you're a good mom! You'll probably get some reading done while the girls are hanging out together. Agree with the trampoline! 😃👍🏻 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa That sounds like a great weekend! Have lots of fun! And remember the challenge is to try to read 24, you may not make it, but so what (I probably won't either), but I'm going to read what I can anyway. Besides, chances are that they'll talk late into the night and sleep late in the morning, so you'll get some time. ;) 8y
HardcoverHearts I'm really looking forward to seeing what you think of this one! Best of luck with the readathon and the sleepover! 8y
ReadingSusan I did the same thing. I will barely be able to participate. 8y
