The Heaven Tree
The Heaven Tree | Edith Pargeter
5 posts | 5 read | 11 to read
England in the reign of King John - a time of beauty and squalor, of swift treachery and unswerving loyalty. Against this violent, exciting background the story of Harry Talvace, master mason, unfolds. Harry and his foster-brother Adam tasted injustice young and together fled to Paris, where Harry's genius for carving drew him into friendship with the enigmatic Ralf Isambard, Lord of Parfois, and the incomparably beautiful Madonna Benedetta, a Venetian courtesan. In their company he returned to his native Shropshire to build a church for Isambard beside Parfois castle. Soaring heavenwards, the tree of stone became an arrow of light; but as it flowered darkening shadows presaged jealousy, pitiless revenge - and death.

Day 15 of #20Series20Days and my pick is this wonderful trilogy set in 13th-century England and Wales.

The author (who also wrote the Brother Cadfael series) considered this her finest work.

#Top20Series

Pickpick

Book 1 of The Heaven Tree trilogy is a good one. Took me a little bit to get into, but by the end I was openly wiping away tears while reading this in public. Recommended if you liked the Brothers of Gwynedd quartet especially.

LeahBergen I totally cried at the end of Book One! 6y
rabbitprincess @LeahBergen The book was practically falling out of my hands, I was turning the pages so quickly! And then I'd have to put it down to wipe away tears 😥 6y

Packing for a visit to my parents and making note of all the books I want to borrow. One is The Heaven Tree, which we decide would stay with my parents because they are collecting the Pargeters.

Then I open my suitcase, which is also where I stash books I've borrowed and read so I can return them on my next visit.

And there's The Heaven Tree! I hadn't brought it back yet to borrow in the first place 🙄

LeahBergen I loved this one. ❤️ 6y
rabbitprincess @LeahBergen It's in the immediate on-deck rotation! Looking forward to it 😊 6y

Welsh book haul part 4, Hay-on-Wye book haul part 2. Bought at Murder and Mayhem, Addyman Books, Hay-on-Wye Booksellers, and Addyman Annexe. The Doctor Who novel with the faded spine is Doctor Who and the Ribos Operation.

LauraBrook All excellent-looking stuff here! 👏🏼 7y
LeahBergen The Heaven Tree trilogy is so good. I liked The King's General, too. 👍🏻 7y
rabbitprincess @LauraBrook Looking forward to everything! @LeahBergen The King's General ticked a lot of boxes! And I remembered your mentioning The Heaven Tree so had to pick that one up. 7y

#TBT This is an oldie and a goodie set in 13th century England (and Paris). I read the trilogy years ago and still vividly remember certain bits.

SusanInTiburon Beautiful cover! 8y
