The Wild Laughter
The Wild Laughter | Caoilinn Hughes
NAMED A MOST ANTICIPATED TITLE FOR 2020 BY THE FINANCIAL TIMES, THE IRISH TIMES & RT 'Extraordinary... A book of wicked intelligence and tender heart.' - Max Porter, author of Lanny It's 2008, and the Celtic Tiger has left devastation in its wake. Brothers Hart and Cormac Black are waking up to a very different Ireland one that widens the chasm between them and brings their beloved father to his knees. Facing a devastating choice that risks their livelihood, if not their lives, their biggest danger comes when there is nothing to lose. A sharp snapshot of a family and a nation suddenly unmoored, this epic-in-miniature explores cowardice and sacrifice, faith rewarded and abandoned, the stories we tell ourselves and the ones we resist. Hilarious, poignant and utterly fresh, The Wild Laughter cements Caoilinn Hughes' position as one of Ireland's most audacious, nuanced and insightful young writers.

It might be the excitement around the nominations for #CampLitsy but I can't get invested in this book and am putting it aside for now. The language, the fact that nothing much happens in the first 100 pages.. I call it quits for now.

Chelsea.Poole Looks like some other great reads too! You pick great books 😊 8mo
TheKidUpstairs @Chelsea.Poole woah is a good word for it 🤣. I read that one as a break from dark and emotional Booker reads. I love when a book just totally revels in its ridiculousness! 8mo

TW: suicide

Absolutely fantastic. Thoughtful, heart wrenching, with a healthy stab of sharp, dark humour. Following the country's economic collapse in the late 2000s, a family in Ireland faces an impossible choice. They love fiercely, but may not like each other (or anyone else) all that much. It's one of the best books I've read this year. Now excuse me while I go hunt down anything else Caoilinn Hughes has ever written....

"Le do thoil means please unless a woman like Nóra says it."

The humour in this one is sharp and quick and true. Used to cut through all the gritty frustration of reality. I'm absolutely loving it. Hughes is a writer to watch!

antidote to sentimental novels on rural Ireland. bleak but lyrical novel about toxic masculinity on a sheep farm in a contemporary Ireland. Religion is here but its empty ritual masking the real blood sacrifice of generation after generation of farm men sacrificed to tradition & land hunger. humorous in a bitter way, and Hughes soars to the heights of lyricism at times. She's one to watch
