On Pandemics
On Pandemics: Deadly Diseases from Bubonic Plague to Coronavirus | David Waltner-Toews
1 post
Written by a leading epidemiologist, this engrossing book answers our questions about animal diseases that jump to humans – called zoonoses – including why they have become more common in recent history, and what we can do about them. Almost all pandemics and epidemics – including SARS, Ebola and now COVID-19 – have been caused by diseases that come to us from animals. In On Pandemics, David Waltner-Toews gathers the latest research to profile dozens of illnesses. Why do zoonotic diseases jump from animals to humans – and why do some hang around for good? How have governments responded to pandemics and epidemics throughout history, for better or worse? How have climate change, industrialised farming, cultural practices, biodiversity loss and globalisation made these diseases not only possible, but the inevitable outcomes of our modern lifestyles? Coronaviruses have made bats their home for centuries. Until SARS came along, we didn’t know they were there, nor do we know how many other death-dealing viruses might be living undetected in wildlife. On Pandemics examines the increasing impact of animal-borne diseases on our world, and encourages us to re-examine our role in pandemics – for the health of the planet as well as our own survival.

Hi, I'd like to get back into Litsy and regular reading again! When covid happened, I got into a reading slump, and I wasn't on here much and didn't read as much. How or did the pandemic effect your reading? Did Litsy change at all? After my initial reading slump last year, all I wanted to read were books about pandemics. Anyone else? 😄😄😄

Prairiegirl_reading I‘m not there with reading about pandemics! Light and fluffy for me mostly. I definitely had a slump at first and am currently in the midst of a bad one. Not sure why now but here we are. Hope you are well and find some great reading!! 😄 3y
tealwish @Prairiegirl_reading Ha, I know. The pandemic book thing is weird. 😆 Hope your slump improves! Anytime life feels too overwhelming, I get slumped too. 3y
marleed Welcome back! For me, books and Littens have been a godsend in this pandemic. I‘ve greatly limited my travel and limited my indoor public shopping to masked and only for what I need. I have though eaten in public restaurants with friends and family - my sanity needs that. But books have allowed me to travel and meet new people - if only in my head. 3y

tealwish @marleed I love that. Nothing transports you or let's you meet new people like books do! 3y
j9brown I've had a very slumpy time on and off, my Goodreads goal is fully out of reach, now. Between the pandemic and family drama, I had a hard time focusing, TV and doomscrolling are just easier. What's helping with the slump for me right now is picking some seasonal spooky reads and getting into the spirit of the month 😊🎃 3y
tealwish @j9brown I lowered my Goodreads goal this year after slumping so hard last year. I also had major family drama last year! May you find a fantastic slump-breaker book soon! 3y
Reggie Last year when we were first off of work for the pandemic and I panicked and I couldn‘t/didn‘t read for 2 months but then it came back to me. This year we went back to work with triple the business and 75% staff and I couldn‘t concentrate. In order not to feel like a reading failure I got into novellas and short stories so that way I did actually read something. Hope your reading comes back to you! 3y
tealwish @Reggie My initial pandemic slump lasted 5 months of sadly reading nothing. It's ironic that I was quarantined in my home, and yet my imagination was frozen so I just couldn't read. 2021 has been far better though. Working from home means I put in a lot more hours and have less for my favorite hobby. I need to find better balance. Agree, shorter works help! 3y
