Auditioning for a New York City performing arts high school could help Etta escape from her Nebraska all-girl school, where she is not gay enough for her former friends, not sick enough for her eating disorders group, and not thin enough for ballet, but it may also mean real friendships.

How did I miss this brilliant book in 2015? I loved everything about this book. Etta has such a unique and strong voice and despite dealing with a lot of really heavy topics, this book is really just about Etta. I highly recommend! #YAlitsy

Check out Hannah's latest work- the title isn't on Litsy yet. Zack is a kid taking care of his mom who has Alzheimers, and his sister, is dating a girl who he hasn't met yet, and training for a ridiculous terrifying 100 mile race. When he finally meets his girlfriend, he finds out she's Deaf. He takes on learning ASL among the other things. Book explores tough conversations between disabled and nondisabled people, tackling very real scenarios.👌🏽

NON-WHITE, BISEXUAL PROTAGONIST WHO IS NOT A VIRGIN AND IS NOT PORTRAYED AS A SLUT.
Damn good book. I rarely give 5 stars, but this was so good. It deals with quite a lot of other-ness in an honest and natural way. It's informative about the struggle without being preachy. Love love ❤️

LiteraryinLawrence This sounds like a much needed book. Thanks for the heads up! 7y
kissxxmyxxconverse @LiteraryinLititz it's so good! I got it from the library, but I'm thinking I should pick up a copy of my own 7y

LOVED this book! Etta is an amazing, real and wonderful character. And I adored her group of friends - Bianca, James and Mason. Yayyyyy for bisexual main characters! And yayyyy for YA books that portray real teenagers who are damaged and flawed and just trying to survive in this wonderful, cruel world we live in. #queerbooks #queer52

("3" isn't on Litsy yet), but guys: polyamorous YA. ???

It's self-pubbed and available on Kindle; it already shot up the LBGT and YA charts on Amazon.

September wasn't my best month for reading or record keeping, apparently. Too busy on too many weekends *sigh* The only one on this list that I liked but didn't LOVE was Tell Me Again How A Crush Should Feel. I can't rave enough about Monster's Daughter, Book of the Unnamed Midwife, or The Best Man (seriously the sweetest and funniest middle grade book with glbt content ever!) I'm still listening/reading Every Kind of Wanting, but it's a pick too.

Reviewsbylola I really want to read The Book of the Unnamed Midwife. 8y

Ballet gets into your soul. It leaves passion that will not die even now when you haven't taken class in 12 years. But that message of perfection gets in your head and your heart and stares at you from every mirror, and it makes you crazy. I love the way this book handled that crazy, that obsession, in Etta, and contrasted it with other people's behavior. We're all crazy, broken, imperfect messes, and that's what makes this the most perfect book.

brendanmleonard i really like ballet books, so i will have to check this one out! 8y

I'm so happy I picked this to read tonight. Lots of interesting things to think about, especially reconciling religion with loving someone who is queer.

I lost most of my free afternoon to an anxiety attack and sleeping off the aftermath. Of course now I have the beginnings of a migraine. So I'm going to spend my evening with these queer YA stories in an attempt to soothe my poor battered brain.

THIS BOOK. This voice! Etta Sinclair is a voice you need on your library shelves. Hers is a voice you need in your own life. She is genuine, she is real, she is feisty, she struggles, she learns, she overcomes. Plus intersectional diversity FTW! I am buying this for my library ASAP!
