The Margot Affair
The Margot Affair: A Novel | Sana Lemoine
12 posts | 9 read | 18 to read
The secret daughter of a French politician and a famous actress drops the startling revelation that will shatter her family in this beguiling debut novel of intrigue and betrayal. There were so many of us, children of these double families who dreamed of the other side. Margot Louve is a secret. The child of a longstanding affair between an influential French politician with presidential ambitions and a prominent stage actress, her hidden family exists in stolen moments in a small Parisian apartment on the Left Bank. It is a house of cards that Margotfueled by a longing to be seen and hearddecides to tumble. The summer of her seventeenth birthday, she meets the man who will set her plan in motion: a well-regarded journalist whose trust seems surprisingly easy to gain. But as Margot is drawn into an adult world she struggles to comprehend, she learns how one impulsive decision can threaten a familys love with ruin, shattering the lives of those around her in ways she could never have imagined. Exposing the seams between private lives and public faces, The Margot Affair is a novel of deceit, desire, and transgressionand the exhilarating knife-edge upon which the danger of telling the truth outweighs the cost of keeping secrets. Advance praise for The Margot Affair Subtle, beautiful, serious.Karen Russell, author of Swamplandia! Sana Lemoine is an extraordinary new talent. One who makes an intergenerational story of loneliness and intrigue read like a diary and a page-turner and a masterful debut, all at once.Victor LaValle, author of The Changeling Powerful and affecting . . . truly exceptional.Rivka Galchen, author of Little Labors

Fabulous debut novel but keep the tissues handy for that ending.

Margot is a naive young woman who thinks that adults will react how she expects them to and she is shocked and hurt when they don‘t.

Margot is endearing in the way she puts her trust in the wrong people while neglecting those she can truly trust and the adults in her life are not the best. This is not giving her a free pass as Margot makes bad choices and has to learn from them.

In The Margot Affair, the biggest secret is Margot‘s father, but then there are more secrets, some smaller, yet no less shocking. And in the backdrop, Paris. The characters and the stories they tell are so interesting and nuanced—this is a book that deserves to be reread.

Really enjoyed this one and it felt very polished for a debut. It also felt very French 😁 love a good walk round Paris. Sadly only in books at the moment of course.
Thanks Cathy ♥️

I was surprised by how how much I loved this. It is lush and vibrant and sophisticated and bracingly intimate. I was even more impressed considering it‘s a debut. 4🌟

This book came out this week. I was lucky to get an ARC from Edelweiss.
I really enjoyed this. The characters were complex and the point of view is not one I gave seen explored often. How would you feel as a 17 year old who is the secret daughter of a loved politician?
This is a coming of age story, and also a book that explorers the rich connection and challenges of relationships.
Also liked it because I rarely pick up French books.

The Margot Affair is a very nuanced novel for a debut author. This book at times felt more like a memoir than a fictional story. As I was reading this book I grew to love Margot more and more.

#ARC #NetGalley Margot, 17 is the love child of a once famous French actress and a married prominent French politician. Margot has never given much thought to her father‘s other life but a chance encounter with his wife leaves Margot desiring more. Hoping to force her father‘s secret life into the limelight she shares her identity with a reporter. This impulsive act will lead to unforeseen consequences. Excellent story, beautiful writing
