After a little boy in a boat appears in Charlies dreams, asking for her help, she finds herself entangled in a world-famous thirty-year-old missing-child case that has never ceased to haunt Louisianas prestigious Deveau family. This book had everything: romance, mystery, grief, spooky, beautiful old homes, the French quarter, swamps, family, love, and lies. Charlie starts having visions of dead kids & is trying to help while dealing with her own grief and loss of her son. It is a journey.

First of all, if you are from south Louisiana, do not listen to the audio. The “Cajun” accents sound more like someone from Mississippi or northern Louisiana. A Cajun accent does not sound like a southern accent. Second, Cajun families did not own plantations. They lived in the swamps and bayous.

Finished in the comments.

Slajaunie Third, please get your terminology correct. If there is a boat in the swamp, it would not be a rowboat. It would be a bateau. This is a flat bottomed boat designed for use in the shallows of the swamps. 5y
Slajaunie I could not finish this book. It was atrocious. The high and mighty Charlie from the east coast was very derisive of the culture of the culture of the south.

Authors, if you are going to write about an area, please do your research. This book was intolerable for someone from south Louisiana who is part of the Cajun culture.

Crazeedi It would be awful to read a book about something you are intimately familiar be done so wrong 5y
SaturnDoo 😣 I read a book last year and the author kept referring to Memphis being in East TN...ummmm since when? Been here in TN all my life, pretty much, and Memphis moving from SW TN was news to me 😂 5y
Zelma Regional accents in audiobooks are rarely done well, but Cajun are always the worst, ugh! 5y

Lord, this woman is a terrible detective and for a clairvoyant, she is dense as hell. That‘s not to say I didn‘t enjoy the trip to the bayou and the mystery as it unfolded but I didn‘t want to shake her more than a few times. I‘ll also admit to getting a little misty-eyed here or there. I don‘t know that I‘ll continue the series or not. But at least I have my “Y” author!

Charlotte, a NY journalist that recently lost her young son takes a job in Louisiana to write a book about a 2 year old that went missing 30 years ago. Entertaining story, but the characters were a bit stereotypical and I saw most of the ending coming. I did enjoy the plantation setting in Louisiana, though and would give this debut author another try.

So much was happening in this book: visions, mystery, dialect, romance, beignets. There were also deeper threads of loss, abandonment, homophobia, and betrayal. That being said I'm a sucker for books set in Louisiana with that southern gothic feel and I liked more in this one than I disliked. The writing could have been about 100 pages tighter. If you don't mind a narrator who's emotional and jumps to some pretty wild conclusions you'll enjoy this

Are y'all following @johnnie_cakes ,bookseller extraordinaire at Murder by the Book in Houston? Here he is with Jack, a former show dog who loves all the attention he gets at the store, posing with so many books that you can order signed copies of. They have an email list of 60,000, if you can believe that. Last time I was there they had me sign a huge stack of books for long-distance customers who always order from them. #getindie
