A decent read - the story is based on the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale with some magic thrown in for good measure.

So. This has not aged well. The not so casual racism was jarring. I cringed my way through, and the whole mess was most certainly not helped by the narrator who managed to be such a nasal embarrassment. She made Rose sound like an uppity idiot all the time.

So.There were some nice bits, Iike the elemental magic stuff. But I think I will not be reading this again.

Beauty & the Beast reselling set in a very slight different version of 1900's San Francisco. Rose, an orphaned linguistic/historical scholar from Chicago comes to live with a Railroad Baron, who's had a terrible accident, to help him with his research. #romantsy #audiobookwalk

Somehow I just skipped completely this series when I was younger and read everything else Mercedes Lackey wrote. So fun! #audiobooks #audiobookwalk

kspenmoll Beautiful walking spot! 7y
CoffeeK8 @kspenmoll thanks! It's a local "zoo" which is an animal sanctuary, all the animals who live there were injured and can't be released back into the wild. Except some of the ducks, they 're just mooches ? (edited) 7y

I love Mercedes Lackey! She weaves really wonderful worlds. This is especially true of her fairytale retellings. Since Beauty and the Beast is my FAVORITE fairy tale, I had to pick this one up. A bit slow at the start, but halfway through I couldn't put it down! Loved it!

aa_guer2021 @TizJ3ss I loved this book, too. Have you read anything else by this author? :) 8y
TizJ3ss @ruskigurl16 I have!! I've read Black Swan and almost all of her 500 Kingdoms series all of which are amazing! I also have a lot more of her books that I haven't gotten around to yet 😊How about you? 8y
