The Prisoner's Wife
The Prisoner's Wife | Maggie Brookes
10 posts | 6 read | 11 to read
Inspired by the true story of a daring deception that plunges a courageous young woman deep into the horrors of a Nazi POW camp to be with the man she loves. In the dead of night, a Czech farm girl and a British soldier travel through the countryside. Izabela and prisoner of war Bill have secretly married and are on the run, with Izzy dressed as a man. The young husband and wife evade capture for as long as possibleuntil they are cornered by Nazi soldiers with tracking dogs. Izzy's disguise works. The couple are assumed to be escaped British soldiers and transported to a POW camp. However, their ordeal has just begun, as they face appalling living conditions and the constant fear of Izzy's exposure. But in the midst of danger and deprivation comes hope, for the young couple are befriended by a small group of fellow prisoners. These men become their new family, willing to jeopardize their lives to save Izzy from being discovered and shot. The Prisoner's Wife tells of an incredible risk, and of how our deepest bonds are tested in desperate times. Bill and Izzy's story is one of love and survival against the darkest odds.

THE PRISONER'S WIFE which is based on true events was very tense, very well written, and very well researched.

Historical fiction fans will be completely absorbed in this book.

THE PRISONER'S WIFE is a beautiful but heartbreaking book.

Loosely based on true events, this page turning thriller centers on a British POW who marries a Czech farm girl during World War 2. As the pair get thrown into a Nazi labor camp, the wife disguises herself as a male soldier to be with her husband as they masquerade and survive the ordeal. Keeps you riveted until the end.

The incredible story of a woman who winds up in a POW camp alongside her soldier husband. Pretending to be a man is necessary to their survival & the survival of a few fellow prisoners they've entrusted with the secret. While the novel is inspired by a true story, the characters are fictional but they feel real. Brookes extensively studied the tragic times & conditions that these characters would have experienced so it's historically accurate.

This was so good. A British POW and a Czech farm girl fall in love, get married, escape the Nazis, get caught by the Nazis and then hide the fact that she's a female an a POW camp. It's based on a true story. I'm not doing it justice. I definitely recommend this.
