Martha Washington
Martha Washington: An American Life | Patricia Brady
7 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
With this revelatory and painstakingly researched book, Martha Washington, the invisible woman of American history, at last gets the biography she deserves. In place of the domestic frump of popular imagination, Patricia Brady resurrects the wealthy, attractive, and vivacious young widow who captivated the youthful George Washington. Here are the able landowner, the indomitable patriot (who faithfully joined her husband each winter at Valley Forge), and the shrewd diplomat and emotional mainstay. And even as it brings Martha Washington into sharper and more accurate focus, this sterling life sheds light on her marriage, her society, and the precedents she established for future First Ladies.

This book is from our local library and it was a wonderful read about Martha Washington‘s life. It portrayed her as a strong woman, very empathetic and a fierce protector of her family and especially George. The inclusion of many things about their daily lives were very interesting and made me feel I could understand her better. She loved being a mother. #100YEARS100BOOKS #97 #BookSpinBingo #12 (Bingo!) #TAILSandTALESforADULTS #24 #FIRSTLADIES

As thorough of a look at the first First Lady that you can get. A good head for family trees is a necessity! Martha was a fascinating lady and I‘m very happy I started off my #reversereadathon by finishing this one up!

I‘m not one to actually read for 24 hours (the puppy just doesn‘t allow it) but this week hasn‘t been great so I‘m going to at least read as much as possible for the @DeweysReadathon #reversereadathon. Here‘s the current TBR that continues with my theme of only reading books by women in 2018! What‘s on your list?

The boyfriend decided he wanted to read a biography about each president, thought I‘d get on board with some First Lady representation. What‘s up long-term reading goals?!

Allylu I‘m doing the same, but my hubby has several years headstart on me! 3y

Presumably when Martha Washington wrote to her husband, she could address her letters "Dear George'" and not #DearMrPresident. ? #fiercefeb
