Family...Tradition...Loss...Revenge...Twists...

This book kept me up. I like how it nagged me to read more, to have to know what happens next.

Another rollercoaster of a read from Mark Edwards which I LOVED!! This time set in a Writer's Retreat in North Wales where things are not quite what they seem... Fabulous!

I read this on audible and I think maybe it just wasn‘t a great book for audio. I got lost in the storyline because it was a little complicated and it felt hard to focus on. It was an interesting idea, but I had a hard time staying invested in this one.

mcctrish That‘s how I felt when I listened to Florida ( short stories that I couldn‘t really time my listening to the length of) I‘d remember the finished story but not the part of the short story I had started and then it just dominoed as I listened further 4y

Finished and have to say this one was my favorite so far. I can‘t make up my mind which book to read next. #HereToStay or #InHerWindow? 🤔

The Devil‘s Work is read! #Edwards is becoming a favorite of mine. I can‘t stop reading his books! I just get so caught up in the read, so exciting. This is next, the cover alone is creeping me out. What‘s in those woods?! 😂 ❤️

Sweettartlaura Try The Magpies trilogy by him, especially as audiobooks. Sold me on him for life 👍🏻 4y
Moniel @Sweettartlaura great minds think alike. I‘ve read all three! Absolutely brilliant! ❤️ 4y

I empathised with Julia‘s grief and refusal to believe that her little girl was gone, along with her husband.
I loved the mystery surrounding the Red Witch and the sacrifice of a child every 35 years. As the story unfolded and clues were revealed I was sucked in by red herrings until the ultimate reveal.
This is a great story which kept me enthralled until the final page.

4.5 stars

Every now and then a book comes along that makes me question whether or not I should be reading it at night. As someone who isn‘t easily spooked by stories, I found the creeped out feeling that The Retreat produced within me to be quite satisfying!

Happy Birthday @gradcat & congrats on reaching 10k Litfluence! 🎊🎉📚🎈 🎁❤

My favorite mystery ever is And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie! This year I also read The Retreat by Mark Edwards, which I really enjoyed.

Lately I've been enjoying coffee with Rumchata. I've also been making a lot of golden milk because my throat has been sore (milk, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, vanilla, & honey).

#birthdaygiveaway

gradcat Thanks for entering!! 5y

This is the deal of the day on Audible in the U.K. and a steal at Q9.99. One thing you can rely on with Mark Edwards, it will be very psychological fiction. He likes to write about bad things that happen to ordinary people. This is rated at over 4 on Goodreads.

KrystleTheBookSlayer I loved this book! 📖 5y

I'm honestly a punk when it comes to anything spooky. This book was more of a mystery with a dash of supernatural, sprinkled with superstition. Loved the writing style. I couldn't stop turning the pages until 3am. Totally worth my next day book hangover.

When you sit down after work to “read a couple chapters” and the next thing you know, it‘s 3am and you‘ve finished the book... it‘s a good thing I don‘t work tomorrow!

I loved this book! The picture of the women in red is the widow in the town. They say she is a witch. This was a perfect read for October. It's about a woman who lost her husband who drowned trying save her daughter. Her daughter's body was never found. I definitely recommend it! #litsy #kindle #kindlefire #paperwhite #library #bookgeek

I enjoyed this. Its not quite a horror story, but a thriller set in North Wales at a writers retreat. Edward's writing is clear, uncluttered and to the point. The story builds up nicely with a surprising climax. This will suit lovers of mystery, horror and intrigue. It's an easy book to read or listen to, and Edwards fits in just enough characters, mystery and plot to keep you turning the pages.

My 1st Mark Edwards book. My first ghosty/creepy book for years. Missing children, haunted houses local child abducting legends. It went full "Wicker Man!"His style is very direct. Hardly a metaphor or similie anywhere. However he makes up for it in plot. Haven't read a page turner like this for years! Always desperate to see what happens next. With more twists and turns than a whirling dervish with a corkscrew. Its a hell yes from me! ???

nozpow Forgot to say that I live in Wales and was recently in Llangollen which the author says roughly the fictional town of Beddmawr is. He gets the vibe totally right 👍🏽🔪😳😱👻☠ 6y

I‘ve been sneaking in a little reading whenever I can during the conference- surprisingly less than I thought I would though!

Also I am sorry to my match for the #HarryPotterSwap, whoever you are, that I am not at home for opening day!! Love seeing all the other posts though! 🧙🏻‍♀️

This was the first Mark Edwards book that I've ever read and it was honestly pretty great! It's dark, creepy, and combines the mystery of a young girl's disappearance with urban myths.

Lucas, a horror author comes to Beddmarr, Wales for a writers retreat, but ends up investigating a young girl's disappearance. But it soon becomes clear that someone doesn't want their small town secrets getting out.

Available on Kindle Unlimited.

The Retreat by Mark Edwards is a fast-paced and gripping thriller that will keep you engrossed. This is a story of urban legends, folklore, superstition that are endemic in isolated rural towns. However, the ending falls short in credibility.
