Pickpick

This is a thriller trying to do too much with too little editing. It had a distracting lack of consistency (did Zara have a tinge or a heavy French accent? did the Vatican know about the eruption of a new island or did it not?). It often felt like the author juggled chapters & forgot to adjust the timing. Dialog early in the book was cringeworthy but improved. And it could be very confusing. Why a thumbs up? He‘s a good writer in need of a good ⬇️

Texreader editor, who‘d minimize the thriller tropes, fix the consistency and dialog problems, make his explanations of predicting the future clearer, and proofread it. Really. The author‘s descriptions of places and people were excellent. He kept it moving. So much potential. I hope he finds an editor, or spends more time cleaning up the books instead of churning them out at breakneck speed (or so it seems). #readingafrica2022 (edited) 2y
Bklover Your comments are wonderful- I‘ll bet you would make a wonderful editor!❤️ 2y
Texreader @Bklover How very kind! Before I went to law school, I owned a tiny little publishing company and wrote and edited for newspapers and other publications. I loved it. Now I write legal memos and briefs! Thank you for your sweet words. 2y
Librarybelle Once again I‘ve enjoyed reading the quotes you post from the books! 2y

Let‘s see how many new African countries the author can fit into this book because now we are in the #CentralAfricanRepublic #CAR (I just learned Bangui is its capitol). I do feel like this author has tried to cram every thriller trope into this novel (even the Vatican), and pretty much covered nearly as many Saharan and near Saharan countries (plus a few European countries to boot).

This book is just hopping all over Africa. We are now headed for the #DemocraticRepublicofCongo #DRC. #readingAfrica2022 #Libya #Malta #Niger (I‘m omitting Chad because so little happened there in the book—just a brief stopover to catch a helicopter.) @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

And yes there‘s a typo in the above quote. The book is in serious need of an editor and proofreader.

We are now in #Chad! Still hoping I might finish this one tomorrow for one of my goals for #20in4 #readathon but I‘ve got a ways to go. I‘m at 73%, chapter 82 of 112. I‘m trying to make some progress tonight

I‘m in, @Andrew65 for the #20in4 #readathon! I hope lots of folks join us! I‘m taking forever to get through my books lately. Maybe this‘ll be the jolt I need. Goals:

📚 read 20 hours (unlikely but you never know)
📚 finish the tagged book #readingAfrica2022 #Libya #Malta #Niger
📚 finish Dreams of Joy #authoramonth
📚 make a dent in my two #chunksterchallenge2022 books: Roots and Davis Copperfield
📚 eat some Greek food for #foodandlit #Greece

Soubhiville I won‘t be joining this time as I‘m having a weekend getaway for my anniversary 😊. I hope you get to read a ton! 2y
Texreader @Soubhiville Congratulations!! I hope you have an awesome and restful trip. 2y

We started in #Libya, spent a few chapters in #Malta, and now we‘ve arrived in #Niger. Just ticking off these countries for #readingAfrica2022. But in all honesty they‘re just traveling through the Sahara Desert, where one place is like the other. I‘m still counting them though, in case I don‘t find any other books to cover those countries.

Ok I‘m now guessing this is self-published with no editor. Almost all the dialog is awkward (see previous post) and now we‘ve got a consistency problem. Either she has a tinge of a French accent, or a heavy French accent. Pick one.

Sad really because it is an interesting book and his landscape and action descriptions are good.

The dialog in this book can be cringeworthy. The bad guy here is monologuing. I doubt bad guys would knowingly admit to being a “man without morals.” I wish authors would just let actions speak for themselves. He‘s holding a knife to a woman‘s throat threatening to kill her. Of course he‘s evil. The story itself is interesting and descriptions are well done. But dialog and attempts to explain timelines are awkward. #Libya #readingAfrica2022

The prologue was very good and now I know at least one country in which the book is set, #Libya! Yay! I don‘t have that country yet for #readingafrica2022

In the next episode in my struggles with ebooks drama, I‘ve decided to try this ebook rather than starting my April #foodandlit book early. (I always have to have an ebook going.) This is a thriller set in the Sahara Desert. I love thrillers, and it‘ll work for #readingafrica2022 although it‘s silent as to what country or countries it‘s set in. Oh well, it‘s still in Africa! The only problem is that it‘s a mini-chunkster. But I‘ll try it anyway.

Librarybelle Good luck! 2y
