Two years ago I binge read Harold Schechter's true crime novellas in the Bloodlands Series, including Little Slaughterhouse on the Prairie. This particularly memorable, & gruesome, incident occurred near the #farm of Laura Ingalls Wilder. For anyone curious about the events, but may not want to read the novella, if you google the title there is a KS Historical Marker that is detailed about the events surrounding the Bloody Benders. #savvysettings

vivastory @mdm139 I had no idea! Adding to my TBR 📚 2y

Halloween was a perfect day to listen to this one! I appreciated how the author recounted not just the Benders‘ horrific crimes, but the fact that there were a substantial number of crimes during these prairie days. It was not a peaceful time by any means. 16 points plus readathons #scarathlon #teamslaughter #screamathon #sbooktober #gothtober #ripreadathon #trickortreadathon #nameinthetitle #ghostathon #gothicreadathon #slaughterthon @Clwojick

There is a whole series of these short little true crime audiobooks ($2 each) that cover crimes throughout American history for all of the true crime loving littens out there.

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Thanks for sharing, just went and got em. 3y
GingerAntics @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego you‘re welcome! I‘m glad I could share the love. They‘re the perfect length for a single sitting. If I have any complaint, it‘s that I would have gladly had it longer. 3y

A great, quick little story for the true crime fan without too much gore. It‘s basically just the facts. There are plenty of details from Pa Bender and his son first settling and building the inn to their escape, all of the supposed sightings, and theories of their end. It‘s a quick listen, but very enjoyable for those interested in history or true crime in America.

GingerAntics There is even a brief mention of Laura Ingles Wilder at the very end for those who stumbled upon this story that way. 3y

Texreader 👍🏻 Thanks for the reminder. I‘m going to try to fit this one in soon. 3y
GingerAntics @Texreader it‘s already over. It really is a quick one. It‘s not all that scary. It‘s firmly nonfiction. It wasn‘t bad at all. The narrator told the story quite well, and LIW is mentioned at the very end. 3y

Look what‘s included in the Audible plus program now for free!! @GingerAntics weren‘t you and some others interested in reading this one?

GingerAntics Yeah. I got it got $2 on Apple Books. That would be a good Halloween listen...but maybe better during the day. lol 4y
Texreader @GingerAntics Yes! I think it would work for all my readathons for #scarathlon #teamharkness! @Clwojick 4y
GingerAntics It‘s really short, too. 1 hour 29 minutes. The way I listen to audiobooks, that‘s 45 minutes. 😂 4y
Texreader @GingerAntics Then I shall squeeze it in this month. 👍🏻 4y
GingerAntics I totally forgot about this little gem. This is perfect for the season. Thanks for reminding me!!! 4y

Another great piece by Schechter of a gruesome 19th century crime. This one with a minor link to Laura Ingalls Wilder. Proof that the tradition of roadside inns with grammatically challenged signs in rural America is a long, & disturbing, one.

Hooked_on_books Fantastic title! 🩸 4y

I was looking for something scary to read on my Kindle and came across this short tale of a family of serial killers that lived down the road from the Ingalls family. I thought this was going to be a zombie retelling of Little House on the Prairie (not sure how I got that idea, just made assumptions) but instead got a well-documented true crime story, with pictures! It is chilling and bloody, still perfect for my mood at the time.
