Mehso-so

Roman dislikes the performative implication of “entertaining” yet this whole book is about putting on a show. I agree that you shouldn‘t feel pressure to make your home feel like a restaurant, but isn‘t it disrespectful to serve dinner at 9:30, 2 hours later than expected? “Unfussy” recipes can be complex & ingredients “found close to home” incl yuzu kosho, harissa, gochujang, fregola & fresh horseradish. Recipes are perfect for anchovy lovers.

Salads must be hyper acidic and pleasingly salty. I‘m talking to the point where each bite is as addictive as a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos.

Jaimelire I have been making lots of salad with lettuce from the garden this year. So good! 4y
Lindy @Jaimelire Same here. Lettuce every day. 🥬🥬🥬🥬🥬 4y
Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira Interesting spin on salads, I will up the acidic and salt levels of mine 😋 4y

Lindy @Josee.a.lu.lit.et.lira See if you like them that way. I usually find restaurant salad dressing too acidic; I use a 4 oil to 1 vinegar ratio. Not a fan of Doritos either. 4y
Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira 🤣 good point; I use to love Doritos! I‘m usually 3 oils/1 acid. 4y
saresmoore I am not a Doritos fan, but I like the analogy and a super acidic salad, too! 4y
Lindy @saresmoore Better to be addicted to salad than Doritos anyway. 😉 4y

The aesthetic in this cookbook bugs me. The good: crisp food shots & all one-of-a-kind vintage tableware. The bad: lots of severed waists, breasts, arms & hands in the shots—parties are happening around the food but I feel shut out, maybe because I‘m not a hipster like them. I feel judgy about folks too busy to drink their coffee before shopping, & careless about candle wax on the tablecloth. Also, serving food in dishes shaped like a woman? No.

KarenUK I totally get it.... None of those pictures above are particularly ‘pleasing‘🤷‍♀️ 4y
KarenUK Isn‘t the purpose of food photography, to make the food look appetizing, not the cook look cool!? 😏 4y
Lindy @KarenUK There‘s an aspirational aspect to many cookbooks and that‘s certainly the case with this one. I think it‘s meant to appeal to hip foodies who don‘t want their friends to know the time spent in preparation (Oh, I just threw this together last minute) & pretend not to care if there are disasters in the kitchen (just have another few drinks while we all wait for supper). 4y

ValerieAndBooks They look like Instagram pictures. Maybe they originally were, and/or were inspired by that Instagram style. (edited) 4y
Lindy @ValerieAndBooks I hadn‘t thought of that. I have heard she‘s a social media darling, and that she has also stirred up controversy over some of her comments, such as dissing rice by calling it tasteless filler or something like that. 4y
KarenUK I love me some mismatched vintage tableware, but to agree with you on that blue dish! Nope. 4y
Lindy @KarenUK I won‘t put up with excuses like “I am aware that this is problematic and I am using it ironically.” 4y

My refrigerator is comically small, so when I entertain I end up storing wine (and other beverages) in a sink or tub filled with lots of ice. The beautiful dramatic presentation of storing wine in your sink or bathtub is *chef kisses fingertips*.

[And where are hands to be washed in her little apartment?]

Elizabeth2 Lol! Many, many years ago (mid 1990s), back when corporations threw big holiday parties in hotel ballrooms, my husband (then boyfriend) and I would fill our hotel room bathtub with ice & beer for the before/after party. 😂 They don‘t throw those kinds of parties anymore. (edited) 4y
Lindy @Elizabeth2 ha! The good old days. Using the bathtub for chilling drinks makes sense, but not the sink. Unless you have a bathroom with two sinks, which is possible. 4y
Tanisha_A Bahahahaha. Although, good idea 🤔 4y

KathyR I assume hands were washed using the bathtub taps. Well, I hope so. (Can you tell my bathroom sink was recently out of order?) 4y
Cathythoughts Good idea ! We only have a half sized fridge ... nice tip 👍🏻 4y
Lindy @KathyR Good point. 4y

I know this will make a lot of eyes roll, but I hate the word slaw. Worse, coleslaw. I don‘t want to yuck anyone‘s yum, but this is my book and if I decide not to call something a slaw, even though anyone could clearly see that it is, that‘s my perogative. So here we have a spicy red cabbage SALAD.
🙄

Hazel2019 Love it! 😁 I don‘t see why we shouldn‘t all start saying cabbage salad. 4y
slategreyskies I actually don‘t like that word either. I‘d kinda thought it was just me. Cabbage salad lovers unite!! 🙌 4y
Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira That is actually what we call it in french, salade de chou. I just checked and slaw or coleslaw both translate to Salade de chou! I'm curious, is slaw used for something else other than to name cabbage salad what a bour cole, as in coleslaw? Don't mind me if I do not make any sense... Beautiful picture! 4y

Alison Roman: “I will not teach you the secrets to mood lighting. (I told you, this is not an entertaining book, but also: candles!)”

I look at all the melted candle wax in the photos and shake my head. Above is an example of black wax on a drawn-thread tablecloth. This is criminal!

What do you think, Jenny? Should this say 1/2 cup butter, or 2 sticks? I can‘t find errata for this recipe anywhere online, but it‘s only idle curiosity because I would never make a cake with 10 egg whites.

Hazel2019 Lol make 2 cakes - one with 1 stick and one with 2 and compare 😁 not a bad experiment to run 😆 4y
Lindy @Hazel2019 Right! If only I had 20 eggs to play with... 🤪 4y
ReadingEnvy And wow it's not angel food if it has butter in it at all so I'm at a loss. 4y

Mtroiano I tend to err on the side of more butter 😁 4y
Lindy @Mtroiano I like the way you think. 😋 4y
Lindy @ReadingEnvy Maybe that‘s why it‘s called Almost Angel Food Cake? The smaller quantity of butter sounds reasonable. 4y

I did some stress baking from the tagged cookbook yesterday. Lemony Turmeric Tea Cake turned out well and I‘m looking forward to leftovers for breakfast.

squirrelbrain Looks yummy! 😋 4y
Lindy @squirrelbrain Thanks! It‘s all gone now. Our neighbours on both sides each got a third of the cake yesterday, so nobody overdosed on sugar. 😉 4y

I‘ve just given my kitchen shelves a good clear out - I‘m a bit obsessed with cook books! So I best not click on the link...!

https://lithub.com/the-10-best-cookbooks-of-the-year-which-would-also-make-great...

AmyG I love cookbooks, too. Not that I‘ve cooked much in the last few years. 4y
Mitch @AmyG we bought an Instant pot last week - so everything we‘ve made since has either been slow cooked over 9 hrs or pressure cooked in 4 mins! Some have worked out great! Some not so!! 4y
julesG Cookbooks 🥰🥰🥰 4y
AmyG My daughter just got an instant pot. I need to move first but I may have to get one, too. 4y
Mitch @AmyG do it! Made some lovely chicken stock today (and no steam on the kitchen!) tonight we‘ve got a lamb biryani (in 5 mins!) 4y
