Somewhere in the Dark
Somewhere in the Dark | R J Jacobs
9 posts | 6 read | 10 to read
Exploring lives on the brink of disaster, R. J. Jacobs returns with another compulsively readable novel of suspense for fans of B. A. Paris and Mary Kubica. Do the mistakes of the past mark us as guilty for life? After a childhood marred by neglect, Jessie Duval's finally got it together. With an apartment in Nashville and a job with a catering company, she's thriving. But all that changes when Jessie works an event where celebrities will be in attendance--including the one person from her past she must avoid at all costs: singer Shelly James. Jessie doesn't hate Shelly. Quite the opposite. One summer, she followed Shelly's tour everywhere. Only, Shelly wasn't flattered; she was terrified by Jessie's devotion--especially after Jessie was arrested. But after a year of therapy, Jessie understands what happened. She's not the same person anymore. Jessie keeps her head down, but when Shelly is found dead, Jessie's troubled past comes tumbling out and she quickly becomes a suspect in the high-profile murder. As the police close in on her, ignoring other credible leads, Jessie realizes Shelly's murder will be pinned on her--the perfect scapegoat--unless she finds the real killer. And no one knows Shelly's life and inner circle better than her. But she will have to go deeper into the dark--if ever she wants to find her way out.

Between a Pick and a So-So.
Overall Rating 3½⭐ | Narration 😁 = Very Good
The backstory of the MC, Jesse, made for a compelling story on its own, this girl‘s story was heartbreaking, and I couldn‘t help but root for her. Sadly, though there were elements of this that didn‘t work for me and I can‘t really say what they were without spoilers...but I still recommend giving this a try because it‘s definitely something different.

Just released a new episode! Probably the most exciting one we've done so far, an interview with real life author R.J. Jacobs. We talk writing, story structure, psychology, and his new (excellent) book Somewhere in the Dark. Check it out!

New episode is live! We talk a good deal about new books, create our own rating system, develop a sort of "book Oscars" and talk with my brother about embarrassing aspects of my past. Check it out here https://open.spotify.com/show/6A6hXZ7eaOG7BtHOSJpCTI?si=MkaSDvfPS867dY2ytz9-Vg

Somewhere in the Dark is a well-written novel with a main character you can‘t help but care about. I firmly believe that Jessie Duval is someone more readers should get to know!

Best reading month I‘ve had in a while. And such an interesting mix! My two favorites were Raven and my #reread of This is Where I Leave You.

The tagged book is an ARC by local Nashville author - and psychologist - RJ Jacobs. We connected through IG a couple of years ago. Last fall, he asked if I‘d beta read his new book. 🤗 I was very flattered. Such a fun experience! It‘s an entertaining read set here in Music City. 🪕 Pub date: 8.11.20

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Jessie‘s horrific childhood shadows her still. Accused of stalking a famous country duo, her world shifts. She tries her best to live a normal life, but lands in an impossible situation. Written in first person, unreliable narrator style, but unlike a lot of current day thrillers, it‘s not just plot-driven, Jessie is a well-fleshed character. Darkness knows her well. This is where Jacobs, a practicing physiologist, shines. 👇🏻

britt_brooke PUB date: August 11, 2020. I had the pleasure of beta reading this book, so this ARC was my second time through. Jacobs is a local (for me) Nashville author and seems like a super nice person. #stackit (edited) 4y
vivastory Stacked, sounds right up my alley! Happy Mother's Day, friend! 4y
britt_brooke @vivastory Thank you! It‘s been a great day with my boys. 💚 RJ seems like a nice guy and his books are set here in Nashville. I‘ll tag his first. He asked me to beta read the new one which was really cool. First experience! The NetGalley version is *almost* perfect, but I‘ll leave that to the pros. Hope you check it out! (edited) 4y
vivastory I've seen that one around. Adding it to my list of books to request from the library when curbside service starts next week 👍 4y
