The Concubine | Elechi Amadi

RIP, Nigerian novelist Elechi Amadi, author of this acclaimed 1966 novel. I'd never heard of him, I'm embarrassed to say, until I noticed the obituary. Has anybody out there read him?

BookishFeminist I think I did in college. I can't remember much about it, but if my memory serves me right, there's some pretty gross treatment of women in it. But it's also precolonial Nigeria (not that this excuses things, but it was a thing then). It's considered to be a Nigerian classic, I think. 8y

BookishFeminist Overall I remember enjoying it though! I wish I could remember more but there were lots of those "had to read it quickly for class" books in college. Maybe I'll check it out again since it's been a while. 8y
