Where I Come From
Where I Come From: Life Lessons from a Latino Chef | Aaron Sanchez
8 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
Americas most prominent Latino chef shares the story behind his food, his family, and his professional journey Before Chef Aaron Sanchez rose to fame on shows like MasterChef and Chopped, he was a restless Mexican-American son, raised by a fiercely determined and talented woman who was a successful chef and restaurateur in her own rightshe is credited with bringing Mexican cuisine to the New York City dining scene. In many ways, Sanchez, who lost his father at a young age, was destined to follow in his mother Zarelas footsteps. He spent nights as a child in his familys dining room surrounded by some of the most influential chefs and restaurateurs in New York. At 16, needing direction, he was sent by his mother to work for renowned chef Paul Prudhomme in New Orleans. In this memoir, Sanchez delves into his formative years with remarkable candor, injecting his story with adrenaline and revealing how he fell in love with cooking and started a career in the fast-paced culinary world. Sanchez shares the invaluable lessons he learned from his upbringing and his trainingboth inside and outside the kitchenand offers an intimate look into the chaotic and untraditional life of a professional chef and television personality. This memoir is Sanchezs highly personal account of a fatherless Latino kid whose talent and passion took him to the top of his profession.

Excuse the March review postings I‘m going to do, I got so behind. This was for my virtual foodie book club & I ended up listening to it, read by the author. Overall, I enjoyed it, finding more interest in his tales of early days at Food Network & chefs as celebrities & his restaurant than the stories of his boyhood-young-adulthood machismo but he does spin a good story. Even better than the book is the Soup Seca (dry soup) pasta dish I found ⬇️

DebinHawaii ... a homey dish Aaron are growing up & where you toast small pasta & stir in salsa & broth & cook through. So easy & good! Link to my review & the recipe: http://kahakaikitchen.blogspot.com/2021/03/a-quick-riff-on-aaron-sanchezs-sopa.h... (edited) 3y
Bookzombie That looks delicious! I still haven‘t posted all my March reviews either. 3y

Still #audiosouping to this one to finish it by 3/31 but my house smells very exotic as I‘m making Misr Wot (Ethiopian Lentil Stew) for #FoodandLit #Ethiopia

I was going to make it last weekend but there were no red lentils to be found in the 3 grocery stores near me & I didn‘t want to brave Whole Foods on a weekend, so instead I ordered them & the berbere spice & nit‘r quibe (Ethiopian spiced butter) from Amazon. Finished 🍲pic coming later.

Yes, still #audiosouping to this one—got to finish it by the end of the month for my virtual foodie book club. The man does like the F-word.🤨

Today‘s soup is my vegan version of Zuppa Toscana. My sister mentioned she made the meat-filled version earlier this week for my niece & her new baby & made me crave it. It smells amazing although the cooked vegan sausage & kale still need to be added. Finished soup pic coming later.

My #audiosouping pick again this week & the selection for my virtual food blogger book club. I have not gotten too far because today‘s soup or Chana Masala Stew is pretty quick to put together. I needed something featuring canned ingredients & this one has chickpeas & fire-roasted tomatoes. Finished soup pic coming later.

LeahBergen I love Chana Masala! 3y

My #audiosouping pick today is for my virtual blogger foodie book club. Just got a couple of chapters in today. Chef Sanchez is narrating & he is quite earnest. 😉
The soup is a Donna Hay recipe for Cauliflower and Corn Chowder, so not a match for the Mexican food in the book but I think it will be good. Finished soup pic coming later.

Trying to rest & regroup today for another crazy week at work. Why are weekends so darn short?! 😬

Bailedbailed

I could not get past 25% on this one. I feel I should share my bails more often because otherwise it seems like I think all books are good. Chef Sanchez surely has an interesting story but he doesn't know which parts matter, which parts to give more detail on, and how to structure a narrative. If he used a ghost writer that person should be fired. He repeats stuff we already know while glossing over stories that sounded interesting, if only.

ReadingEnvy I was shocked he'd been around the food Network for 20 years though because I used to watch it all the time and only remember him popping up for iron chef America.... 4y
Hooked_on_books Sounds like he needed a better editor. He was a frequent judge on Chopped for quite a while. I think it‘s great when people share their bails. It helps just as much as a rave review. 4y
