Commissaire Adamsberg investigates the death of three men linked by their childhood at an orphanage in Nimes, all killed by the venom of the recluse spider, in the new novel by the #1 bestselling French crime writer A wildly imaginative series. The New York Times Adamsberg is a terrific creation and his team of misfits a joy to watch in action.Peter Robinson, New York Times bestselling author of the Inspector Banks series A murder in Paris brings Commissaire Adamsberg out of the Icelandic mists of his previous investigation and unexpectedly into the region of Nmes, where three old men have died of spider bites. The recluse has a sneaky attack, but is that enough to explain the deaths of these men, all killed by the same venom? At the National Museum of Natural History, Adamsberg meets a pensioner who tells him that two of the three octogenarians have known each other since childhood, when they lived in a local orphanage called The Mercy. There, they had belonged to a small group of violent young boys known as the "band of recluses." Adamsberg faces two obstacles: the third man killed by the same venom was not part of the "band of recluses", and the amount of spider venom necessary to kill doesn't add up. Yet after the Nmes deaths, more members of the old band succumb to recluse bites, leading the commissaire to uncover the tragedy hidden behind the walls of the orphanage.

Three old men die in quick succession, apparently bitten by poisonous spiders. But the bites are rarely if ever fatal so is there something more sinister going on?

I found some of the psychological musings most unlikely (arachnophobia has its origin in childhood sexual abuse, seriously?) but despite that I did manage to finger the culprit fairly early on.

A nicely colour-coordinated stack 😊

rwmg I've got the English translation of the Vargas on order. Judging by past experience it should arrive at the end of November or beginning of December 4y

The latest (final?) book in the Commissaire Adamsberg series and another book full of oddities. Adamsberg goes through a gradual thaw and then a rude awakening and a tooth extraction. There are rifts in his department, a near betrayal, insects, spiders, recluses, an orphanage, and through it all, Adamsberg‘s own strange crime-solving methods. This series is not to be missed! More, please! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Recommended to me but just not for me. Too much dialogue and seemed convoluted. Perhaps lost in translation for me.
I think I‘ve tried one of her books before and didn‘t like it.

I‘m not phobic, but I Do Not Like spiders. And the main plot of the latest Vargas involves murders disguised as recluse bites. Nope, nope, nope. If she weren‘t my favorite mystery author, I‘d have quit, but I guess I‘m just going to have to deal with having the creepy crawlies for a week or three.

(Book is out, but my copy is an ARC.)

I wanted to take my time reading this, the last new Vargas I can read, before the new one comes out. I failed. I dived and only came back up after there were no more pages. Vintage Adamsberg. The plot is less gruesome than the last one. 3 deaths by spider‘s bite. This strange news takes hold of Adamsberg and, we, the reader are taken on a ride. Vargas mixes as always science, superstition and instinct. Loved it. #readinginfrenchjuly

I am of two minds right now... finishing up Vargas' last opus in one go today or not and read it in little bites. 🤷🏼‍♀️
Team time trials are fun to watch. Today's stage is at a reasonable hour of the morning and relatively short.

🚴‍♀️ is what will be background noise while I read this July. Beautiful scenery mostly and the sprint to the finish line at the end of the stage. The live stage was at 5 am so I only caught the last part of the stage and the Sagan show at the end. Hence watching the repeat tonight while reading Vargas. #tourdefrancereading

CarolynM I always enjoy Le Tour. Started watching for the scenery, but I've now come to appreciate the sport as well🙂 5y

Une nouvelle enquête d'adamsberg, toujours à son propre rythme et avec sa propre logique. Comme de retrouver un vieil ami.
