The Days of Anna Madrigal
The Days of Anna Madrigal: A Novel | Armistead Maupin
11 posts | 24 read | 4 to read
Suspenseful, comic, and profoundly moving, the latest novel in Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City series follows one of modern literature's most beloved and indelible charactersAnna Madrigal, the transgender landlady of 28 Barbary Laneas she embarks on a road trip that will take her deep into her complicated past. Now ninety-two, and committed to the notion of "leaving like a lady," Mrs. Madrigal has seemingly found peace with her "logical family" in San Francisco: her devoted young caretaker, Jake Greenleaf; her former tenant Brian Hawkins and his daughter, Shawna; and Michael Tolliver and Mary Ann Singleton, who have known and loved Anna for nearly four decades. Some members of Anna's family are bound for the otherworldly landscape of Burning Man, the art community in Nevada's Black Rock Desert where sixty thousand revelers gather to construct a city designed to last only one week. Anna herself has another Nevada destination in mind: a lonely stretch of road outside of Winnemucca where the sixteen-year-old boy she once was ran away from the whorehouse he called home. With Brian and his beat-up RV, she journeys into the dusty, troubled heart of her Depression-era childhood to unearth a lifetime of secrets and dreams, and to attend to unfinished business she has long avoided. The ninth and final novel in Armistead Maupin's classic Tales of the City series, The Days of Anna Madrigal is the triumphant resolution to a saga of urban family life that has enchanted and enlightened readers around the world since 1976.

2-24-21: My 21st finished book of 2021! The 9th and final book of the Tales of the City series. I didn‘t want it to end and when it did I cried. The gang from Barbary Lane travel to Burning Man while Mrs. Madrigal tells us some stories from her youth and takes a trip back to her home town. I‘m going to miss these characters so much. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #thedaysofannamadrigal #armisteadmaupin 👍🏼📖#️⃣2️⃣1️⃣

Glad to see this prompt as I really need to fill a gap in this area and am eager to stack everyone‘s picks. The best and most instructive part of this project for me is seeing where I haven‘t read.
My only #ownvoices read is the very wonderful George by Alex Gino.
While not written by a trans person, I still recommend The Tales of The City series & the much loved Anna Madrigal, the first trans character I came to know & love.

KVanRead Also here‘s a link to an article on how the Netflix Tales reboot worked to include trans representation while keeping Olympia Dukakis in the Anna role. https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2019/06/tales-of-the-city-netflix-anna-madr... 4y

The appropriate accessories for Mrs. Madrigal are, of course, a kimono and a joint. As I am lacking in both departments, a generically bohemian backdrop will have to do. 😉
.
Also, I have finished the entire series. 😫 NOW WHAT ON EARTH DO I READ?

Has anyone else read this series? I scored this book on sale yesterday and it's the last book in the Tales of the City series. Wondering if the books can be read out of sequence or if it is best to start with the first book. 📖

Skybariline I‘ve read and enjoyed the series a lot. I do recommend reading the books in order. They are all very fast reads. 6y
minkyb No help here but always fun to read a book. 6y
MizLit Definitely read the series in order. 6y

GuiltyFeat I read the first 6 books in order nearly 30 years ago. I never picked up the later books. One day I might return to Barbary Lane. 6y
CarolynM Love this series. Definitely start from the beginning and keep in mind the times in which those first volumes were written! 6y
BookMaven407 @Skybariline @MizLit Thank you for letting me know, I appreciate it. I'm going to see if the library has the first book and getting going with the series. 6y
BookMaven407 @CarolynM Thanks for the feedback. I will keep that in mind. I'm hoping my library has the first book. 6y
BookMaven407 @minkyb I agree. 🙂📖 6y
MizLit @BookMaven407 did you know it‘s anniversary of his series? PBS just did a wonderful documentary about Maupin and the television series. You know it was a column first? 6y
BookMaven407 @MizLit I had no idea! I must admit I was not familiar with Maupin until recently. I watched a segment from the Miami Book Festival on Book TV a couple months ago that featured his new book. I noticed the tagged book on the sale rack and thought why not 🤷🏻‍♀️? I'll look for the PBS documentary On Demand. Thanks for the tip. 6y
minkyb @BookMaven407 I meant to say read a free book! 🤦🏻‍♀️ 6y
BookMaven407 @minkyb no worries! Hope you are having a good weekend.🙂 6y
Reggie I‘ve only read to the book before Michael Tolliver lives. But read in order. 6y

Finished this tonight. It‘s probably my least favourite of the TotC novels, but given how much I loved the early books, maybe that‘s not a surprise. Probably one for the fans, but it‘s still good.

celtichik I started it, but stopped. I wasn't ready to let go of Anna. Do pick up Armstead's memoirs...he goes into how the characters came about and you get to meet his family and friends....interesting people, as you can imagine. 6y
Verity @celtichik I think that might have been my problem: I wasn‘t ready to let go. The memoirs are on my Christmas list! 6y

A very sweet and very satisfying ending to a series of books that I've been reading most of my life. Nicely done.
