English Creek | Ivan Doig
11 posts | 6 read | 5 to read
In this prize-winning portrait of a time and placeMontana in the 1930sthat at once inspires and fulfills a longing for an explicable past, Ivan Doig has created one of the most captivating families in American fiction, the McCaskills. The witty and haunting narration, a masterpiece of vernacular in the tradition of Twain, follows the events of the Two Medicine country's summer: the tide of sheep moving into the high country, the capering Fourth of July rodeo and community dance, and an end-of-August forest fire high in the Rockies that brings the book, as well as the McCaskill family's struggle within itself, to a stunning climax. It is a season of escapade as well as drama, during which fourteen-year-old Jick comes of age. Through his eyes we see those nearest and dearest to him at a turning pointwhere all four of our lives made their bendand discover along with him his own connection to the land, to history, and to the deep-fathomed mysteries of ones kin and ones self.

ljuliel Did you see any type of theme or similarities with the Doig , Cather and Frazier ? I really like Doig‘s writing , have only read a half of a Cather book but not sure why I never finished it, as her writing was good. The Frazier sounds good. How‘d you like it , and didn‘t he write Cold Mountain ? I wasn‘t overly thrilled with that book. 5y
Lcsmcat @ljuliel Yes, they are very similar writers. Although from different parts of the country, the land for each is very important- a character in and of itself. Also I find particularly Doig and Frazier to be introspective writers. Cather is too, but to a lesser degree perhaps. 5y
Lcsmcat @ljuliel And yes, Frazier wrote Cold Mountain. 5y

Pickpick

Doig‘s novels are love letters to the West, particularly Montana. His prose is poetic, his humor gentle but insightful.
The McCaskill‘s of Two Medicine are people you would like to know. Jick McCaskill grows up in multiple ways during the summer of this book and takes you along for the ride if you let him. Now I need to reread Dancing at the Rascal Fair!
(Picture from many years ago, and Wyoming not Montana. But close to the border.)

BookNAround Doig is a gorgeous writer. (edited) 5y

Published in 1984, set during the depression, being read in 2019, and the phrase “Republican headquarters” to describe an outhouse works for all 3. 🤣

“as far as I‘m concerned, Montana without its mountain ranges would just be Nebraska stretched north.” 😆

“No matter what time of day you approached it, the Hebner place looked as if demolition was being done and the demolishers were just now taking a smoke break. . . . In short, not much ever functioned on the Hebner place except gravity.”

Lcsmcat I love Doug‘s writing - contemplative and poetic. And having lived out west, his portrayal of Montana feeds my soul. 5y

A great book to read about a lifestyle many people don't know or understand. A must read to learn about Montana in the 1930's.
