The Lily of the Field and the Bird of the Air
The Lily of the Field and the Bird of the Air: Three Godly Discourses | Sren Kierkegaard
8 posts | 1 read
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells his followers to let go of earthly concerns by considering the lilies of the field and the birds of the air. Sren Kierkegaard's short masterpiece on this famous gospel passage draws out its vital lessons for readers in a rapidly modernizing and secularizing world. Trenchant, brilliant, and written in stunningly lucid prose, The Lily of the Field and the Bird of the Air (1849) is one of Kierkegaard's most important books. Presented here in a fresh new translation with an informative introduction, this profound yet accessible work serves as an ideal entre to an essential modern thinker. The Lily of the Field and the Bird of the Air reveals a less familiar but deeply appealing side of the father of existentialismunshorn of his complexity and subtlety, yet supremely approachable. As Kierkegaard later wrote of the book, "Without fighting with anybody and without speaking about myself, I said much of what needs to be said, but movingly, mildly, upliftingly." This masterful edition introduces one of Kierkegaard's most engaging and inspiring works to a new generation of readers.

Mehso-so

Just. Woah. Kierkegaard is a swirling mass of contradiction. He writes nature and the joy of the natural world beautifully and easily hold his own with the contemporary he‘s often compared to, Thoreau but he‘s also a “Faith is unconditional obedience”/ God *fearing* (emphasis on fear) fundamentalist Christian, a theology that‘s not mine and doesn‘t appeal. He also hangs the basis of his hard core theology on the placement of single words in the ⬇️

GlassAsDiamonds New Testament (“first”) in these discourses but he‘s writing in Danish in relation to a Bible most likely in Latin, that was itself a translation from Ancient Greek of the written account of a speech most likely delivered in Aramaic (the Sermon on the Mount) AND he wants the placement of these words to drive his version of highly fundamentalist Christian living. Rely on Google Translate *once* to know how nuts that is so... weird book but poetic. 5y

This probably shouldn‘t make me giggle .... but it did.

Kierkegaard does my head in. We‘ve flipped from a half a discourse on the need for absolute and unconditional obedience to God, replete with hiding from the Devil and quivering in fear at the awful patience of God, to exulting in the joy of a chorus of singing birds. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ His expression of the glory of the natural world would be a joy to read ... if only he wasn‘t quite so permanently terrified for the state of his immortal soul.

See..... this is why Kierkegaard and I aren‘t destined to agree. I‘m very bad at people telling me to just be quiet and agree with their thesis.

Someone at the bookstore has a sense of humor (Kierkegaard is a fundamentalist Christian theologian of the “Faith is obedient suffering” school).

Back reading to Puff but hoping we might be able to bring her home 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

BethM I love that bookmark! All the best thoughts for Puff 💕 5y

A very silly book from a time people earnestly believed animals didn‘t have souls. Sitting on the floor of a vet hospital ward with Puff while the lovely Muslim guy from yesterday visits his VERY TALKATIVE KITTY - this paragraph is total BS, as is his “blissful ignorance” argument. One wonders how humanity progressed when you read this.

Yep, arguing w. a towering bastion of intellectual argument who...was a deluded & ignorant. Room kitty agrees.

Megabooks Animals definitely have souls!! How are y‘all today? I hope you‘re not upset with me, and I really, really hope Puff is improving. What a brave girl! ICU is no fun. 💕💕💕 5y
Crazeedi I hope Puff is improving, sending hugs 5y
GlassAsDiamonds @Megabooks NO!! I‘m so sorry I didn‘t get back to you - it was 3am my time and I fell asleep holding my phone!!! Thank you SO much for all your insight and reaching out! I had a skim of the article (omg we need this vaccine ASAP) and had an idea what to ask which was very appreciated. Today they said that the results seemed to point away from lymphomas but were still waiting and watching (but inching SO SLOWLY forward). 😊♥️😊🙏🏻 5y

GlassAsDiamonds @Crazeedi thank you! Slowly slowly slowly inching there it seems. She‘s probably got another four days in hospital they think so she‘s still really sick but her temperature is down (🥳) and she‘s responding (slowly 😭) to treatment!!! Not out of the woods yet and definitely need those hugs 🤗 5y
Megabooks @GlassAsDiamonds oh hallelujah!! I‘m so happy she‘s improving! Still sending positive vibes to her and hugs to you! 💙💙 5y
Crazeedi @GlassAsDiamonds will keep you both in my thoughts. Hang in there! It's so hard to watch our kitties hurting! 5y
GlassAsDiamonds @Megabooks oh, she‘s so sick but I will take that hope! The lovely vet called with the results & told me that was the good news but she‘d have to stay in hospital probably for the weekend because she‘s still responding slowly .... I was half expecting a terrible diagnosis so I actually asked what the bad news was! 😂🤦🏻‍♀️😂 I think she was very confused. 5y
GlassAsDiamonds @Crazeedi thank you ♥️ & oh man, is it ever! I just want to be able to explain that it‘s okay and she‘s there to heal 😭♥️♥️😭 Such trust they place in us. ♥️ 5y
Crazeedi @GlassAsDiamonds I know that, my kitties have all been so precious to me. I have 2 but at one time I had 6, lol. They are my heart❤️❤️ 5y

Still plugging on with Kierkegaard .... on reading this, I‘m convinced he‘d never once actually met a child who wasn‘t terrified of him. He‘s got quite a lyric turn of phrase when he wants, especially when he‘s invoking nature but he‘s also a die hard fundamentalist (Calvin?) & we don‘t share a theology so. A distracting intellectual pursuit (Puffs responding to treatment which is AMAZING AND NEEDS TO CONTINUE!)

Lauram I‘m happy things are improving for your cat. (edited) 5y
Megabooks Yay! I commented above. What a trouper! Continuing to send positive, healing thoughts your way!! 5y
CareBear Lots of love to Puff 💜💜💜 5y

Arguably my brain is mushy but this might not be the best reading for a vet hospital floor...🤔🤔🤔🤔🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

Megabooks Probably not...speaking as a vet. 5y
AlaMich I‘m so sorry about Puff. I hope they figure out what she needs and that she‘s up and about very soon! 5y
GlassAsDiamonds @Megabooks ooohhh.... you‘re a vet?!?! Cool! What‘s your speciality? (And yeah...maybe different reading material for tomorrow. I didn‘t realise Kierkegaard was a Christian theologian & the other people visiting their kitty were Muslims. In a country with a lot of militant Christian proselytising, the last thing I wanted was for them to feel uncomfortable, especially with a sick kitty so I was editing out a lot of words (& shared treats 😊)! 5y

GlassAsDiamonds @AlaMich thank you ♥️♥️♥️ 5y
Megabooks @GlassAsDiamonds I was in small animal private practice, but my last job was in research and development at a supplement company. 5y
Megabooks What‘s going on with Puff if you don‘t mind me asking? I hope she recovers quickly! 5y
GlassAsDiamonds @Megabooks not at all and any insight you‘ve got would be DEEPLY appreciated - she was a rescue at somewhere around a week/ ten days old, we‘ve had her since she was about 4 weeks old but as a result, she‘s got no “correct” cat responses which has been tricky for the vets. They‘re saying an infection of the ileum? Walls 1cm thick. Her temp was 40.3 but I think only for a few hours (paranoid cat Mum). She‘s on drip fluids and a feeding tube 5y
GlassAsDiamonds @Megabooks I‘m worried that today (she crashed Sunday night) her temp seemed up and breathing shallower but they decided since she‘s so screamy getting her temp taken to do it tomorrow when she‘s having a full follow up ultrasound under sedation. I mentioned the breathing to the vet so it was on note but have no idea what to do or ask or expect. Also some raised pancreas numbers but they thought those could be stress?? 5y
Megabooks I hate to say this, but my other thought besides infection is GI lymphoma. Have you lived in a country where there is feline leukemia or FIV? Has she been been tested for either? Being positive would make it more likely to be lymphoma. Either can be passed through the placenta, so she wouldn‘t necessarily have to have been around other cats to have it. It‘s hard to tell infection from lymphoma from even IBS without a biopsy. Has she had one? 5y
GlassAsDiamonds @Megabooks and (stop me when this is annoying - Puff‘s my first cat and now I‘m feeling like everything we‘ve done, because it was mainly in China and India could have massive huge holes in it. We only just found out that the Mumbai vet had left out her FELV vaccine - blood tests cleared THAT, thank god but it was a really horrible moment). Do cats need supplements and how much do companies research & test those? 5y
GlassAsDiamonds @Megabooks yes FIV is rampant in both India and China and I suspect feline leukemia is in India at least but she was tested for both after that first night and they said she was clear. She‘s had a blood test, ultrasound and urine test. No biopsy yet. If the blood tests are clear, can it still be lymphoma? 5y
Megabooks Yes. Here‘s an article https://www.vetfolio.com/learn/article/gastrointestinal-lymphoma-in-cats I‘m glad they tested her for FIV/FeLV, and I‘m glad you‘re in Singapore. Supplements are a little more complicated. We mainly worked on sick pet ones and ran our operation more like a pharmaceutical company than a typical supplement company. 5y
iread2much Oooph that is heavy reading. I haven‘t read any heavy Philosophy in years...I hope your kitties my feels better soon! 5y
GlassAsDiamonds @iread2much was NOT expecting it either!!! (That‘s what I get for a cover buy of a “I know I‘ve heard of this guy and ahold probably read him...and it‘s a great cover so hey, how bad can it be?? 🤦🏻‍♀️😂🤦🏻‍♀️). Still a long kitty road ahead but she‘s responding to treatment and we‘re really hopeful ♥️ 5y
iread2much @GlassAsDiamonds I wish a speedy recovery 😊 5y
