Love Thy Neighbor
Love Thy Neighbor | Ayaz Virji

A powerful true story about a Muslim doctor's service to small-town America and the hope of overcoming our country's climate of hostility and fear. In 2013, Ayaz Virji left a comfortable job at an East Coast hospital and moved to a town of 1,400 in Minnesota, feeling called to address the shortage of doctors in rural America. But in 2016, this decision was tested when the reliably blue, working-class county swung for Donald Trump. Virji watched in horror as his children faced anti-Muslim remarks at school and some of his most loyal patients began questioning whether he belonged in the community. Virji wanted out. But in 2017, just as he was lining up a job in Dubai, a local pastor invited him to speak at her church and address misconceptions about what Muslims practice and believe. That invitation has grown into a well-attended lecture series that has changed hearts and minds across the state, while giving Virji a new vocation that he never would have expected. In Love Thy Neighbor, Virji relates this story in a gripping, unforgettable narrative that shows the human consequences of our toxic politics, the power of faith and personal conviction, and the potential for a renewal of understanding in America's heartland.

As a conservative Christian in a red state, this was thought-provoking. I agree it's good to understand what other religions say, and believe his stories of Islamaphobia are true. But when he says thinks like (paraphrased from memory), “Do Christians really believe that I am going to Hell?“ with the tone that his selfless, generous life should save him, I'm left like, “Well... yes.“ We never get to hear his friend Pastor Mandy's take on that.

I don‘t blame Dr. Virji for being angry. He took a job that filled a desperate need for a doctor in a rural community, built a thriving hospital, & a separate business that employed local people, only to be met with hate after the 2016 election.

We live in a divided world. Politics haven‘t been this divisive in decades. It breaks my heart that fear and ignorance have closed minds.

A very important book. Read with an open heart. #bookspin

A Muslim doctor in Minnesota wakes up the morning after the election to discover that not only is Trump president but his town overwhelmingly voted for him. Feeling betrayed by his neighbors his first impulse is to leave but he then partners with a local pastor to give a speech about his faith which then turns into a series of lectures. I found this short audiobook absorbing and affective.
