Detective Jack Caffery and police driver Flea Marley follow a trail of apparent suicides to Elf's Grotto, a nearly bottomless network of flooded quarries, where someone--or something--lurks, ready to disappear into darkness or slip into houses unseen.

Mehso-so

I enjoyed this book. 2 storylines ran parallel which only one was really needed and there was a lot of filler but overall a good read and not what I expected at all. I was left with a few questions but noticed it's part of a series so I may need to continue to find out more.

This book is so creepy. If you like Silence of the Lambs, you will probably like this series by Mo Hyder.

annkuch13 I love this series so much, but they are pretty graphic and depressing. 5y

Over the past couple of books in the series I feel it has lost its way slightly and morphed into a new series. I feel this book did improve as the book went on & did enjoy the ending of the book - just bringing it into a pick at the eleventh hour. I feel more needs to be done to bring the two lead characters together to improve this series further. I‘m hoping the improvements towards the end will continue into the next book. Overall worth reading.

EadieB @Andrew65 Nice review and I agree! 5y
julesG I'm not sure I like Flea. And I don't really want her and Jack get together. Does this make me a bad person? Dissing fictional characters? 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Thanks 😊 5y
Andrew65 @julesG I think I agree with you totally on all these points! Don‘t think it makes either of us bad. 😂 5y

Trying to catch up with the buddy Reads I have got behind on recently with the crazy work schedule. Starting by getting back to Skin, the fourth book in the Jack Caffery Series, which I am about 20% through.

Tove_Reads It‘s a bit creepy: “andrew65 tagged you in a blurb about Skin”. 5y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads 😂😂😂 5y
EadieB @Tove_Reads @Andrew65 A so-so book for me! 5y

julesG @EadieB @Tove_Reads - okay, I'll join you for book 5. Is that on already? I need to dig it up (either on my kindle or a physical copy) 5y
Tove_Reads @julesG As soon as Andrew is ready with his catching up pile! 5y
julesG @Tove_Reads that could be any minute. 😁 5y
Andrew65 @julesG @EadieB @Tove_Reads I should hope to finish book 4 today so can rad book 5 any time from tomorrow onwards and at least be caught up with one series. 😂 Let me know when you want to start it. (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB Agree, Book 3 was weaker. Much preferred book 1 and 2 which were set in London. Big departure in book 3. 5y
julesG I should be able to find Gone until then. 😉 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 i was referring to Skin being so-so for me too. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB So far I would agree at 28% in. Not sure why Flea was introduced to the series, now seems more about her. 5y
Andrew65 @julesG Took me to my third ebook library, but have managed to find an available copy of Gone which I have downloaded. @EadieB @Tove_Reads 5y
julesG Not sure why Jack is part of the series. 5y
Andrew65 @julesG I‘m not even sure why it‘s one series. Feels like two different series. 5y
julesG Goodreads has two names for them. Birdman and then The Walking Man series starting with The Ritual 5y
Andrew65 @julesG The Ritual does seem to start a new series. 5y
julesG With a bit of Jack thrown in, for confusion 5y
Andrew65 @julesG Yes, and just a little bit. 5y

The decomposing body of a young woman is found just outside Bristol. Seems like she's committed suicide. But DI Jack Caffery is not so sure. There is another subplot of a killer who is collecting skin from victims. I really liked the first 2 books better than the 3rd and 4th. The Walking Man makes another appearance and Flea's brother becomes a bigger problem for her. You should read Ritual first as this book starts only a few days after Ritual.

MrT I've also read all of these. The Birdman, the Treatment are the first two in the series. The Treatment totally freaked me out as it's set in the same London Borough I was born and grew up in. A lot of the locales I am familiar with. 5y
MrT Pig Island also unsettled me. Creepy AF. 5y

EadieB @MrT That‘s interesting! I love when I am familiar with the locations of a book I am reading! 5y
EadieB @MrT I own Pig Island but haven‘t read it yet. I think it‘s a stand-alone😀 5y
MrT Yup. As Is Devil of Naking, and Hanging Hill , I suggest you read PI in the daylight. 5y
EadieB @MrT Oh that sounds scary! You have me curious. I will have to get to it soon. 5y
Andrew65 @MrT I really enjoyed Hanging Hill. Mr T we must hail from the same borough and area, no longer live in the South of the country but was brought up in the Tulse Hill Area. The Treatment being set in and around Brockwell Park freaked me out too as spent so many hours in that park in my youth and in the Lido. Although not lived in that area for 30 years. (edited) 5y
Andrew65 Not finished this yet, and like you enjoyed book 1 and 2 far more. I wonder why she changed things so significantly in book 3 and 4. Great review. (edited) 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Hopefully she will get the message that book 3 and 4 did not work. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB 🤞🤞🤞 5y

What a unique first sentence for a book. A bit worried about what is coming next!

‘Human Skin is an organ!‘

Andrew65 @LiteraryinLititz That‘s what I thought! 😱 5y

Starting book 4 in the Jack Caffery Series which I am reading along with @EadieB and @Tove_Reads All welcome to join us!
Book 3 seemed to take a very different direction from book 1 and 2 (which took place in the area I was brought up in London), then relocated with a different team to Bristol in book 3. This seemed a bizarre change so interested to see where they take the storyline now.

Tove_Reads @andrew65 what‘s your verdict? 5y
EadieB @Tove_Reads I have 100 more Pgs in A Place Called Freedom which I will finish tonight. I like this book a lot as I look forward to reading it again every time I put it down! @Andrew65 5y
Tove_Reads @EadieB My least fave of all Folletts. Still good, but doesn‘t compete with the other ones I‘ve read. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB @Tove_Reads I read all 568 pages after the work week during 24 hours of this weekend. I can see what you mean as predictable @Tove_Reads and like a number of other similar books. I did really enjoy the story and read it with very few breaks. He just knows how to write a good and engaging story, even if some others of his are better. I gave it 4.5 stars. They usually get five stars 😂 (edited) 5y
Tove_Reads @Andrew65 I gave it 3,5. He can most definitely write, no doubt about it, but I just felt like I‘ve read similar stories before from about halfway in. The thing is, I expect (too) much from him nowadays 😂 5y

Book 4 in the series but only the 2nd one I‘ve read. A nice thriller with interesting characters. My only complaint is the main character, Flea, makes a lot of stupid decisions. Other than wanting to yell at her a few times, I enjoyed reading this.

julesG Flea made me move the series to the back of my TBR. I still want to read it and at the same time don't want to. 6y

Thrift store finds. I am most excited to read Skin by Mo Hayder. I have also been wanting to read The Devil in the White City. The Oath was just an impulse buy. It sounded interesting 😄

Theshadedbuffalo Devil in the White City was my first Erik Larson book. It‘s super interesting. Enjoy! (edited) 6y
laundry_piles Skin was so good! Hayder is my favorite, I've read all her books. I hope you enjoy! 6y
Lcsmcat Devil in the White City is excellent! 6y
JamieArc I‘m currently 150 pages into Devil in the White City. So many interesting tidbits in this book b 6y
LRSmith Loved Devil in the White City! OK, ‘loved‘ is probably the wrong word. I couldn‘t put the book down. So we‘ll researched and written. Enjoy! 6y

This was another good book in the series, though it didn't grab me quite as much as the previous ones. I definitely like this series and am so invested in the characters.

Its a few years since i visited the jack caffrey series as i hadn't been wowed by tge third book. A break was useful as i enjoyed this book which sees jack investigating the disappearance of a celebrity at the same time as mopping up the baggage from the last bok whilst police diver flea deals with her brothers issues. A good pacy read which i enjoyed.
