#1 New York Times bestseller! From extremist groups to NASCAR to forensic twists, Temperance Brennan is back in a turbo-charged story of secrets and murder. A body is found in a barrel of asphalt in a landfill just before Raceweek when 200,000 fans are pouring into town. The next day a NASCAR crewmember visits Temperance Brennan at the MCME and tells his story. His sister, Cyndi Gamble, then a high school senior who wanted to be a NASCAR driver, disappeared twelve years before along with her boyfriend, Cale Lovette. Lovette used to hang out with a group of right-wing extremists known as the Patriot Posse. Is the body Cyndis? Or Cales? At the time of their disappearance, the FBI joined the investigation because of Cales association with extremists. But the search was quickly terminated. Was there a cover-up? Tempe considers the multiple theories: did the pair take off together to join the underground militia and then get killed by militia types? Did Cale kill Cyndi and disappear into the militia underground? The case gets more complex when another man, Ted Raines, is identified as missing in Charlotte, where he had gone for the big race. Ted was an employee of the CDC in Atlantic. Could the body be his? What could Rainesif it is Raineshave been up to?

This was a quick read and not as dramatic as her previous novels. Strictly done in Charlotte and not Canada. Good characters and an interesting case.

This one was a reread for me. Enjoyed it just as much the second time around. Temperance Brennan is one of my all time favourite characters.

TrishB Mine too 👍🏻 sad that it is unlikely there will be anymore. 5y

Everything about this was fine. These books get more repetitive as we go along but I enjoy the mystery. There wasn‘t a lot of body mystery stuff in this one. Like I said. It was fine.

Melli I thought the same the when I read it, it was very tame and technical not a lot of action 6y
KeepCalmWithBooksAndCoffee @Melli Agreed! lots of riding around in cars and phone calls. I was a little disappointed! 6y

Another decent installment in the Temperance Brennan series. I was more interested in my delicious salt water taffy though to be honest. #boutofbooks

Reading goals set for 2017. I don't plan on reading as much this year as I did last year because this year is going to be much better and I will not have to bury myself in books! #determined #readinggoals
