Life Mask
Life Mask | Emma Donoghue
The bestselling author of Slammerkin vividly brings to life the Beau Monde of late eighteenth-century England, turning the private drama of three celebrated Londoners into a robust, full-bodied portrait of a world on the brink of revolution. In a time of looming war, of glittering spectacle and financial disasters, the wealthy liberals of the Whig Party work to topple a tyrannical prime minister and a lunatic king. Marriages and friendships stretch or break; political liaisons prove as dangerous as erotic ones; and everyone wears a mask. Will Eliza Farren, England's leading comedic actress, gain entry to that elite circle that calls itself the World? Can Lord Derby, the inventor of the horse race that bears his name, endure public mockery of his long, unconsummated courtship of the actress? Will Anne Damer, a sculptor and rumored Sapphist, be the cause of Eliza's fall from grace? This is a remakable novel in the tradition of the very best historical fiction.

Pickpick

An extremely well-written novel of historical fiction - I loved it! It was fascinating to look into the world of scandal, rumour and innuendo that used to surround the subject of homosexuality, as well as the class differences where any extra-marital sexual relationships were concerned. This book really made the historical events of the time come alive.

batsy I enjoyed this one, too 👍🏽 6y
CoffeeCatsBooks I have gotten so far behind on her books. I didn‘t even know about this one. 6y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook @CoffeeCatsBooks I always seem to think I have read more of her books than I have, but she is fast becoming a favourite author! 6y

It still looks and feels mostly like summer, but autumn is here! 60 pages left of Life Mask - it's been a great read, but other print books are calling so I'm happy to finally be almost done.

I haven't been posting much lately as things have been somewhat busy and I'm stuck in a bog of not finishing any books any time soon. I had to completely abandon the biography I was excited to read as it was just too heavy to take anywhere with me, handle with one hand while eating lunch etc - there was no way I was finishing in time. I'm really enjoying Life Mask, and I'm reading Kristin Lavransdatter on Kindle - only 22% after weeks!

BookaholicNatty Hey don‘t get discouraged!!!! It happens to us all! Just so you know your not alone....❤️😍 6y

Ubookquitous @LauraAndTaraAndBooks - she thinks so too! She is long-haired and spring shedding means I have enough Callie hairs to make a new cat.... 7y
LauraAndTaraAndBooks 😆😬 tell me about it! My Tara is long haired too and black, which has not boded well for my cream carpet and a next-to-useless vacuum cleaner!! 7y
Ubookquitous We use a handbrush designed to get hair off the furniture... Of course, Callie loves to attack the brush thinking it is her toy... Or that her hair is perfectly acceptable on every surface of the house! 7y
Bibliogeekery I love that book 😍 #queerbooks 7y

#ReadJanuary Day 5: #DressesonCovers

I read this a number of years ago. I don't remember details very thoroughly but do recall finding it a lovely--if complicated--love story between two women in late eighteenth century England.

Realistic considering the time period, but still hopeful and not leaning toward the tragedy that so much #LGBT fiction can fall into.
