Slime: How Algae Created Us, Plague Us, and Just Might Save Us | Ruth Kassinger
5 posts | 2 read | 7 to read
No organisms are more important to life as we know it than algae. In Slime, Ruth Kassinger gives this under-appreciated group its due. Elizabeth Kolbert Say algae and most people think of pond scum. What they dont know is that without algae, none of us would exist. There are as many algae on Earth as stars in the universe, and they have been essential to life on our planet for eons. Algae created the Earth we know today, with its oxygen-rich atmosphere, abundant oceans, and coral reefs. Crude oil is made of dead algae, and algae are the ancestors of all plants. Today, seaweed production is a multi-billion dollar industry, with algae hard at work to make your sushi, chocolate milk, beer, paint, toothpaste, shampoo and so much more. In Slime well meet the algae innovators working toward a sustainable future: from seaweed farmers in South Korea, to scientists using it to clean the dead zones in our waterways, to the entrepreneurs fighting to bring algae fuel and plastics to market. With a multitude of lively, surprising science and history, Ruth Kassinger takes readers on an around-the-world, behind-the-scenes, and into-the-kitchen tour. Whether you thought algae was just the gunk in your fish tank or you eat seaweed with your oatmeal, Slime will delight and amaze with its stories of the good, the bad, and the up-and-coming.

@Amiable thank you for this fun #fallingforfallswap box! It was like walking on an autumn day when all the little leaves flew out! My dog slobbered all over the wrapping paper and was very interested in the chocolates. You sent my favorite tea which I was out of! I have done this puzzle already, but I‘m sure one of my friends will enjoy it. The books and the bookmark are fabulous! Thank you so much!!!!

Algae is a lot more interesting than I ever thought! I‘m amazed at the broad range of applications and just how prevalent it is in our lives. While in excess in certain forms it can be problematic, it‘s also an essential building block for life as we know it. There were even seaweed recipes included after the epilogue.

Algae, without in Earth as we know it wouldn't exist 😮. Book has 4 sections; history, food, practical uses ( bio engineering again!)and climate. Both hopeful and saddening, did you know we have the technology and knowledge to scale up algae as fuel replacing gasoline and jet fuel ? But gas would cost $7.50 gallon so instead we have fossil fuels.

#nonfiction2019 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Something you pick

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds very interesting, plus if more people invested and the tech advanced, I bet that price would go down. 🤞 5y

Crazeedi Very interesting 5y
Sunraven That‘s the second time in fifteen minutes I‘ve seen a metaphor involving alchemy. Is the universe trying to tell me something? 😆

Also, I love the word “scintilla.” It sounds like a glittering monster.

...And now I want to read this book. Living things are awesome.

Sunraven And now, I‘m second-guessing my use of the word “metaphor.” Sleep deprivation is the opposite of awesome! Whee! 😅 5y
