Portrait of an Addict as a Young Man
Portrait of an Addict as a Young Man: A Memoir | Bill Clegg
Bill Clegg had a thriving business as a literary agent, a supportive partner, trusting colleagues, and loving friends when he walked away from his world and embarked on a two-month crack binge. He had been released from rehab nine months earlier, and his relapse would cost him his home, his money, his career, and very nearly his life. What is it that leads an exceptional young mind want to disappear? Clegg makes stunningly clear the attraction of the drug that had him in its thrall, capturing in scene after scene the drama, tension, and paranoiac nightmare of a secret life--and the exhilarating bliss that came again and again until it was eclipsed almost entirely by doom. He also explores the shape of addiction, how its pattern--not its cause--can be traced to the past. Portrait of an Addict as a Young Man is an utterly compelling narrative--lyrical, irresistible, harsh, honest, and beautifully written--from which you simply cannot look away.

This memoir was a lucky library find.

I have often read Bill‘s name in the acknowledgments of books as a literary agent, but I did not know he struggled with addiction. This is the story of how he lost his fledgling literary agency, relationship, and nearly his life in a month-long crack binge. He captures the deceit, paranoia, and damage that addiction wreaks really well. Heavy CW for drug and alcohol abuse. #audiobook

BarbaraBB I don‘t like books about alcohol or drugs use (they often are so monotonous) but I am sorry to hear this about Clegg, I loved 3y
AmyG I, too, loved Did You Ever Have a Family. I had no idea about Clegg. 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB that can definitely be true of addiction memoirs, but this one was very short. (4.5 hour audiobook) I have wanted to read Did You Ever… but just never happened upon it at the right time. I need to see if my library has the audiobook. @AmyG 3y

Cinfhen I knew about this book but somehow it‘s escaped me…need to look for it. Yes, Bill Clegg gets loads of author shout-outs and Did You Ever was good! 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I definitely need to go back and read his novel. I think you‘d like this memoir, and it‘s a quick read. #BorrowNotBuy though. 3y

This book is the author Bill Clegg's memoir of his crack-cocaine addiction which drained his bank account of over 20k, ruined his New York City publishing agency and also left him scorn by his boyfriend of a few years. Quite a sad and tragic memoir. It's unbelievable what drug addiction can do to a successful person. The book is a fast read and overall I give it a positive grade.
