Diamond as Big as the Ritz
Diamond as Big as the Ritz | F Scott Fitzgerald
6 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
Although this novella stands out from his body of work in that it's a playful yet sinister fairy tale, it brilliantly fuses F. Scott Fitzgerald's ongoing lush fantasies about the extremes of wealth with his much more somber understanding of what underpins it. Loosely inspired by a summer he spent as a teenager working on a ranch in Montana, "The Diamond as Big as the Ritz" is Fitzgerald's hallucinatory paean to the American West and all its promises. It's the story of John T. Unger, a young Southerner who goes to Montana for summer vacation with a wealthy college classmate. But the classmate's family proves to be much more than simply wealthy: They own a mountain made entirely of one solid diamond. And they've gone to dreadful lengths to conceal their secret ... meaning John could be in danger. But the family also has a daughter, lovely Kismine, and with her help, John may yet escape the fate her family has meted out to all their other guests so far ...

Diamond as Big as the Ritz | F Scott Fitzgerald
Mehso-so

Contemporary lineal descendants of George Washington run a secret diamond mine on enslaved labor. mine operator Culpepper plots to keep the African Americans in perpetual slavery by manufacturing a false proclamation that the North had lost the Civil War, & the lie continues into the twentieth century action of the story. The satire of racism and exploitation is biting, BUT the lack of individuation of the Black characters kind of undercuts that.

And with that, my @deweysreadathon comes to a close. My one and only read was this odd little novella about a man who finds a huge diamond, thanks to a squirrel, and will stop at nothing to protect and defend it.

Lcsmcat I‘d never heard of this Fitzgerald before. I‘ll have to check it out. And your 😻is adorable . 7y

Jess_Read_This @quirkyreader Oh, mine most definitely is rag tag as well. All sorts of editions, sizes, and conditions make up mine. I love the character of them all together. 7y
Jess_Read_This @LeahBergen She was amazing, just amazing. I didn't realize she only made three U.S. stops this time and feel so lucky to have met her. 7y
Jess_Read_This @Emiller I loved that book in the series. She talked a little bit about Walsingham. She did a pilgrimage tour there as part of the research for that book. 7y
elliemcc11 Is she British? I visited Walsingham with my grandmother years and years ago. Pretty place from what I remember. I remember standing by a cross as well. Long time ago now, 20+ years. 7y

I've always hated The Great Gatsby, but thought I should try a different F Scott Fitzgerald to see if it's just that one I dislike and so when I saw this on #subwayreadsnyc I gave it a shot. NOPE. I can't get on with his books at all.

The racism, portrayal of women, and style just don't work for me at all. I know it's meant to be a comment on American values and wealth, but I hated reading it and had to push to finish even though it's a short.

ultrabookgeek How do you even download anything? I always mean to, then forget. Also, nice to meet someone else who doesn't like Gatsby- I never got that book. 8y
Kitta @ultrabookgeek I just have the page open on my phone and pick up where I left off - need to be careful not to let it re-direct when getting on the subway wifi though UGH the scrolling! Everyone I know loves Gatsby, I just don't get it. Glad to meet someone else who agrees with me too! 8y
