Who can spy on the spies? The man he knew as Control is dead, and the young Turks who forced him out now run the Circus. But George Smiley isnt quite ready for retirementespecially when a pretty, would-be defector surfaces with a shocking accusation: a Soviet mole has penetrated the highest level of British Intelligence. Relying only on his wits and a small, loyal cadre, Smiley traces the breach back to Karlahis Moscow Centre nemesisand sets a trap to catch the traitor. The first novel in John le Carrs celebrated Karla trilogy, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a heart-stopping tale of international intrigue. The premier spy novelist of his time. Perhaps of all time. Saddens me to say I need to walk away from this one for now. It‘s boring me to tears. I‘ve never experienced this with a John le Carré novel before. ?

Shocking, I know. Another le Carré novel for me. My old fallback.

Pickpick

The tradecraft and intrigue is of course fascinating, but what makes le Carre's novels so good (in my opinion) are that the characters are so familiar in so many ways. People who have given everything to their careers at the expense of their personal lives, who continue chasing promotions long after their belief in "the mission" has faded, with advancement up the Firm's ladder representing the only sort of personal progress still remaining to them
