An impressive book that recounts the modern social, political, and economic history of black Americans. But more than that it describes how neatly institutionalized racism fits into a larger scheme of capitalistic exploitation at the very center of American life. Written in the wake of Ferguson it is even more relevant today.

Thanks to #25infive I felt motivated enough to set aside some time to finish this book. I only read about 5 hours over the last five days, but that‘s 5 hours more than I‘ve read in a long time. Taylor doesn‘t hold back in her critique of Obama and capitalistic ideology. Overall, this was a great read.

Andrew65 Pleased to see the challenge has got you reading again. Thanks for taking part and well done. 👏 6y

Sunshine, coffee, and a book. A great way to kick off #25infive Here‘s hoping I can get in a few hours of reading over the next couple days.

Today is the first time in recent memory that I won't be watching the Super Bowl. I love football. I'm a die-hard Patriots fan. Am. Was. I don't know. I'm still figuring that out. Their connections to Trump really turned me off to the point of feeling uncomfortable calling myself a fan. This season I've been boycotting the NFL in support of Colin Kaepernick, and I'll continue that today. ✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿Looks like another Sunday of reading for me!

Gezemice That does not sound like a bad plan to me. 6y

swishandflick Thanks!! 6y
Audrey I haven‘t read the stages book but I read an excerpt or an op ed by Almond about it. I‘m not a football fan or watcher but can appreciate the struggle fans have with the sport. Enjoy your reading day. 6y

Starting this tonight! I've had this on my list since it came out and have heard nothing but great things about it. Taylor's work on police brutality and racial and class inequality is really important. Hoping to learn a lot. ✊🏾

TheNextBook Dammit! I can tell this is a library book other wise I would ask to borrow it. 7y
Laalaleighh Will have to add it to my BookishfeministSuggestedReading list! 7y
BookishFeminist @TheNextBook i may end up buying it! It's really good so far. If I do I'll let you borrow it. 7y

mommyincolortv @BookishFeminist This is a weird question but how did u get the black emojis? I need them. 7y
BookishFeminist @concreterosereads5889 Not a weird question! A valid one! Do you have an iPhone or Android? I use an iPhone and get them by long-clicking on the emoji I want a different skin tone for. It gives five options. 7y

Look at this brand new subscription box I found! They haven't shipped their 1st box yet but will soon. It's 2-3 books by black authors, fic/nonfic. We love our book mail so I figured I'm not the only one interested. 😉

I don't subscribe to book boxes bc they often rely heavily on popular books, often less diverse so I likely have them already. But this looks great! Great way to get more nonfic & diverse books in your stacks. ✊🏾📚

LauraJ The name is misleading, but it sounds like something worth checking out. Thanks for sharing! 7y
Shortstack Ooooooo!! How much is it?! 7y
BookishMarginalia @LauraJ the name bothers me too. 7y
TheBookAddict @LauraJ @BookishMarginalia yeah the name is iffy. @BookishFeminist if you get it please post a picture. 7y
Donna_sBookMinute I haven't paid much attention to subscription services in general. But this is my second encounter with a reference to one today. I can be pretty skeptical about promotions concerning my race, so I'll just watch this particular one from a distance. @LauraJ and @BookishMarginalia -- I agree with your concerns about the name. I see it as a play on words; but it has the potential to mislead and/or backfire. I'll stop there. 7y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack $100 p/3 months I think? 7y
BookishFeminist @Donna_sBookMinute Yea I tend not to pay attention to them either, this one caught my eye since I rarely see services focused on non-commercialized stuff. I understand your skepticism. It's entirely black owned & operated, so I'm hopeful, but not in a position to judge. I'm curious to see how it goes & hope it does well. May see what they pick for the first few months & see if I'll subscribe then since it's a little out of my budget now. 7y
BookishFeminist @LauraJ @BookishMarginalia @TheBookAddict @Donna_sBookMinute I wonder if they realize it's misleading or intended a play on words. ? I hadn't even noticed. The group that runs the service advocates for supporting black businesses & uses the slogan "buy noir," but I think this is their first venture into books. 7y
MoniqueReads305 It looks like they forget the "e" in noire which is unfortunate because some will think it's crime fiction. 7y
Donna_sBookMinute @BookishFeminist, I hope it's successful, too. But, while ethnicity is a factor, it is not the reason for my skepticism. If it meets my expectation, it does. If it doesn't, it doesn't. I'm also optimistic about a name that heralds Black authors. So, knowing that it's Black-owned, I'm hoping they take note of the issue with the name, acquiesce, and move forward. I agree they were probably unaware of the noir genre when creating a name. (edited) 7y
BookishFeminist @MoniqueReads305 Agreed, adding an "e" would go a long way here. I hope it doesn't backfire. 7y
BookishFeminist @Donna_sBookMinute I hope so too. Definitely interested to see where it all goes & fingers crossed it'll work out well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. ☺️ 7y

Critical read, especially to learn about more modern eras of history. I especially enjoyed how Taylor makes connections across different eras of history and the writing is very readable.
