The Game of Love and Death
The Game of Love and Death | Martha Brockenbrough
Not since THE BOOK THIEF has the character of Death played such an original and affecting part in a book for young people. Flora and Henry were born a few blocks from each other, innocent of the forces that might keep a white boy and an African American girl apart; years later they meet again and their mutual love of music sparks an even more powerful connection. But what Flora and Henry don't know is that they are pawns in a game played by the eternal adversaries Love and Death, here brilliantly reimagined as two extremely sympathetic and fascinating characters. Can their hearts and their wills overcome not only their earthly circumstances, but forces that have battled throughout history? In the rainy Seattle of the 1920's, romance blooms among the jazz clubs, the mansions of the wealthy, and the shanty towns of the poor. But what is more powerful: love? Or death?

Finished this on the plane to LA.

I never thought I'd love it this much. The story was beautiful, seeking the meaning of love and death, and of course life. But the audiobook was brilliant. There's serene and understanding tone in the narration which deepened all the emotions. And it had not one but three songs of its own, with lyrics and all. Definitely a pick!

EchoLogical I loved this book, gonna have to find the audio! 7y

Ugh, what a slog to get through. Flat characterization, an illogical plot moved not by character motivation or anything else believable but because the god characters of Love and Death just make stuff happen, a superficial historical setting used just for flavour, stupid sexist crap, and race handled sloppily. Curse having to finish books when you're reading them for a class.

BookNerdBritt Oh no, this one sounded so good! 😩 7y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @BookNerdBritt I know, right! Suffice it to say that in the end it ends up being the story of an African-American young woman who gives up her career dreams for "love" aka a white dude. Barf. Would def recommend skipping it. 7y

EchoLogical @gibblr My coworker LOVED All the Bright Places! I read it and thought it was so-so... Probably because I expected a happy ending. If I had to pick a favorite it would be between A Game of Love and Death and Illuminae. If you ever decide to read Illuminae, grab the audiobook, it's fantastic! 7y
gibblr I think that's exactly why I loved it! I really hate tidy endings. I actually just picked up Illuminae for the first time in my school library yesterday. I've seen it over and over and haven't even bothered to read the description. Will def add the audio to my list! 7y

I loved this book from the moment I opened it, & love it even more after hearing Martha Brockenbrough talk about it this evening. She is my #WonderWomanWednesday, to whom I would happily listen talk about anything. She has so much curiosity, & such attention to detail. One of my (many!) favorite things she said was that she writes each of her supporting characters as if s/he were the star of his/her own book, & sometimes they take over the story.

BookishFeminist This sounds good! 7y
Nomad_Student It is, @BookishFeminist! 1930s Seattle, jazz, characters pitted against both societal norms and larger forces at work - good stuff. Lots of interesting history woven in, too. 7y

Oh the games Love can play and how ignorant we players can be! So beautiful...eloquent...a lovely piece of writing about true love.

And, Ch 21...OH MY! Be still my beating heart! I fell in love with this creative writing and artfully exquisite prose.

Go read this now, my peeps!

This book came so highly recommended but I found it to be lacking in just about everything. I couldn't care about the characters because I couldn't stop wondering if they were only in love because Love and Death had interfered with their destinies. Which ultimately lessens the stories depth.

tnorris Agreed! I found myself skimming large sections at a time. Which is a bummer because the concept is great!! 8y

9/10
This book has made my heart heavy.
The thought of Love and Death playing a Game over mortals seemed a bit cheesy. But after reading the outcome between Flora and Henry made a special place in my heart.

The Game of Love and Death is indeed, as you might expect, a love story. But it is also a story about history, inequality, and tragedy. Full review: http://goo.gl/HUCwbu

Devastatingly elegant. The dynamic of Flora & Henry burns fierce & sweet, and themes of race & sexuality in 1930s Seattle are deftly explored. Love & Death were lofty, but still a brilliant exploration of the meaning behind the human spirit. ★★★★☆.

currently reading: The Game of Love and Death, Martha Brockenbrough | I've heard this is amazing until it gets boring. Thoughts, Litsy people (Litsers? Lits? Lits-appers)? Also, I am SO in the mood for something Romeo & Juliet related.

taraolivero LOVED that book😍 8y
georgia I wouldn't say boring but the pacing could definitely be better! I hope you enjoy it 8y
Sharanya @georgia it was GREAT. I wasn't bothered by the pacing at all! 8y
