When the Floods Came
When the Floods Came | Clare Morrall
6 posts | 6 read | 4 to read
In a world prone to violent flooding, Britain, ravaged 20 years earlier by a deadly virus, has been largely cut off from the rest of the world. Survivors are few and far between, most of them infertile. Children, the only hope for the future, are a rare commodity. For 22-year-old Roza Polanski, life with her family in their isolated tower block is relatively comfortable. She's safe, happy enough. But when a stranger called Aashay Kent arrives, everything changes. At first he's a welcome addition, his magnetism drawing the Polanskis out of their shells, promising an alternative to a lonely existence. But Roza can't shake the feeling that there's more to Aashay than he's letting on. Is there more to life beyond their isolated bubble? Is it true that children are being kidnapped? And what will it cost to find out? Clare Morrall, author of the Man Booker Prize-shortlisted Astonishing Splashes of Colour, creates a startling vision of the future in a world not so very far from our own, and a thrilling story of suspense.

Happy Monday! Today‘s plan WAS to clean bathrooms and read on my day off. Instead, I‘m wet-vac-ing water from a flooded basement. Hoping to destress with a book in the afternoon! 😔

Smrloomis Oh dear! Sorry to hear about your basement. Hopefully it all cleaned up ok? 6y
Graciouswarriorprincess Oh no! Sorry to hear that!! 6y
LauraBeth Oh no - that stinks! Hope that you can still salvage some of your day. 6y

Cortg @Smrloomis @Graciouswarriorprincess @LauraBeth @tamra @eggs Plumber has come and gone. Water is back on. Contractor is coming for an estimate at 3pm. I‘m treating myself to some sushi and some reading for lunch, I think I deserve it! 6y
Cortg @JoScho Not fun, but maybe the insurance will come through and I‘ll get some new flooring and a fixed bathroom / plumbing! 6y
Eggs I hope you do @Cortg ❣️ 6y
JoScho New flooring is nice 6y
Smrloomis @Cortg 🤞🏽 let‘s hope so! 6y
Graciouswarriorprincess @Cortg sounds like a good plan. Crossing fingers for you.😉 6y

I‘m sure all of you lovely bookish folk know about this, but it makes me happy every time I hear about it.

I wonder if I‘ll have the willpower to keep my #secretsantagoespostal parcel until the 24th and have my own little #jolabokaflod

PS Iceland is a wonderful place and you should visit.

Tamra My kinda party! 6y
BookMaven407 I knew they exchanged books but I didn't know the rest of the information. Thanks for sharing. 6y
Bookish.SAM I love to mention this to anyone who will listen! I wish I could get this tradition going around my family 🎄📚❤️ 6y

AlaMich This almost sounds too good to be true. I want to go to there!! 6y
TricksyTails Well, I'm moving to Iceland then! 🇮🇸♥️📚 6y
starlight97 I'd totally live in Iceland if it wasn't so freaking cold ❄⛄ 6y
umbrellagirl @Bookish.SAM I‘m trying to get it started this year. My son is getting a Diary of a Wimpy Kid book and I have a new book that my auntie gave me set aside. 6y
Bookish.SAM @umbrellagirl Maybe I should work on my nephew to get his parents into it! I‘m already the auntie that insists on buying him books for every occasion. So far he mostly just throws them around, but it‘s more than the rest of the family does with them 😜 6y
batsy Honestly I think Icelanders have it figured out 💙 6y
umbrellagirl @batsy I agree completely! 6y

16 ~ When the Floods Came by Clare Morrall (Kindle edition📱) ~ Started: 08.02.17 ~ Finished: 13.02.17
Rating: 4/5📚

I enjoyed 'When the Floods Came', it was interesting and funny at times. I liked the Polanskis, they are all memorable characters and I enjoyed their story. I felt that the ending was slightly rushed but it took nothing away from the story.

Highly recommended.

I feel like I brought on this rain in Sydney by picking up this title this week.
Oh, & it was crazy to read on page 107 about artworks that had been dragged up from the basement for protection from the floods, knowing that the same thing happened at the Louvre recently
