The Ship
The Ship | Antonia Honeywell
WELCOME TO LONDON BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT Oxford Street burned for three weeks. The British Museum is occupied by ragtag survivors. The Regent's Park camps have been bombed. The Nazareth Act has come into force. If you can't produce your identity card, you don't exist. Lalla, sixteen, has grown up sheltered from the new reality by her visionary father, Michael Paul. But now the chaos has reached their doorstep. Michael has promised to save them. His escape route is a ship big enough to save five hundred people. But only the worthy will be chosen. Once on board, as day follows identical day, Lalla's unease grows. Where are they going? What does her father really want? WHAT IS THE PRICE OF SALVATION?

My favourite thing to do is to sit down with a good book, my cats and a cup of coffee. Here are my girls as kittens, and as grown cats. The tuxedo kitty likes to lie on my chest as I read, preferring to get in the way as much as possible in front of my book. I just finished reading The Ship - it has me contemplating concepts of safety, hope and freedom to choose.

A lot of the reviews I read on this one were pretty unfavorable. But I thought it was a really great meditation on religon, what it means to be human, relationships, and how humanity responds to a crisis. The biggest themes for me were the importance of what has come before and what it means to really live. I wasnt really a fan of any of the characters, but I dont think you were really supposed to be. "What was thought, after all? Only a means for self-torment, self-doubt."

Its funny how easily we fall into thought traps, especially this one, when something is difficult. We just want to be able to turn off all thought and let someone else take the wheel.

This book is good at making me think big philosophical thoughts within fiction, especially right now bc i cant seem to fall asleep!

The reason I keep reading this book: these beautiful mini-moments that make you sit and think about the wonder of living and how everyone deserves human connection and the chance to live.

(I should state that I don't think this book is great. But I am loving these small moments where the selfish teenage narrator is able to look outside of herself and see that there are so many who deserve more than they get in life)

A completely implausible apocalyptic novel where the world is falling apart and a man builds an ark for his family and 500 people, which leaves from London. His stupid bratty daughter tries to resist the father's utopian cult. Nobody knows anything about science, including, I'd say, the author, considering all the things that would have to be true for this novel to be realistic. Ugh.

Two apocalyptic/dystopian novels featuring #floating havens when the earth suffers catastrophic flooding. The Children's Hospital is fantastic. I'm less confident about The Ship but it was a steal at £1.50 #junebookbugs

I've become completely uninterested in this novel. Haven't picked it up in two weeks, at least. Maybe someday I'll go back to it. I'm re-reading 1984 again for my book group, and it is much more satisfying!

This is an interesting concept, life as we know it is ending and your one of the chosen 500 to start again, somewhere safe but with no hope of a future. I enjoyed this book, i didn't like the main character at all, she is naive and extremely selfish however I think that's the point. It definitely makes you think about what you would do in her red shoes.

An interesting idea for a new YA dystopian fiction but the main character is not very likable which really slows down the pace . I think it will serve as a good starting point for discussion though

Slightly disappointed with this audio prequel to The Ship. a solid story, but it didn't add much to what we already know about this particular dystopian version of Britain. (I've tagged The Ship as The Time Being doesn't seem to pop up in Litsy's catalogue!)

Ugh... I'm only 12 pages in and the main character is already annoying me 😞I know she's a teenager but come on! #youngadult #dystopian
