Such a Long Journey
Such a Long Journey | Rohinton Mistry
6 posts | 20 read | 11 to read
It is Bombay in 1971, the year India went to war over what was to become Bangladesh. A hard-working bank clerk, Gustad Noble is a devoted family man who gradually sees his modest life unravelling. His young daughter falls ill; his promising son defies his fathers ambitions for him. He is the one reasonable voice amidst the ongoing dramas of his neighbours. One day, he receives a letter from an old friend, asking him to help in what at first seems like an heroic mission. But he soon finds himself unwittingly drawn into a dangerous network of deception. Compassionate, and rich in details of character and place, this unforgettable novel charts the journey of a moral heart in a turbulent world of change.

Simultaneously reading along with Mythologies by Barthes. I hope I will enjoy it.

DrexEdit I love Mistry‘s writing, even though I‘ve only ever read A Fine Balance. I‘ve read that Twice! I need to read more Mistry. (edited) 3y

It is a great read set in 70s Mumbai around Parsi community with a background of Politics and Bangladesh war. Social and political commentary runs hand in hand with the Nobles' story throughout.
This commentary by the author, and his descriptions of various customs, emotions, scenes and events are really something appreciable.
Loved it!!

Blaire I loved a fine balance. Haven‘t heard of this one. 5y
Parvez @Blaire I have also read A fine balance, which was one of my all time favourite. 5y

A jolt of caffeine, a good book, a train commute that's actually on time --I guess a Monday could be worse.

LeahBergen I really enjoyed this one. 😍 6y
Amiable @LeahBergen -- If you like Mistry's work, I'm sure you read "A Fine Balance," right? Excellent book! How about "Family Matters"? That was a good one, too! 6y

Fabulous writing ❣ such a joy to read. Set in Bombay during the war between East and West Pakistan. The protagonist Gustad Noble and his community are Parsi and the story gives a fascinating insight into their culture.
