Duel: The Parallel Lives of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr
Duel: The Parallel Lives of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr | Judith St George
8 posts | 8 read | 14 to read
Learn more about the men who inspired Hamilton: The Musical in this fascinating look at the historical friends turned revolutionary rivals! In curiously parallel lives, Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr were both orphaned at an early age. Both were brilliant students who attended college? one at Princeton, the other at Columbia?and studied law. Both were young staff officers under General George Washington, and both became war heroes. Politics beckoned them, and each served in the newly formed government of the fledgling nation. Why, then, did these two face each other at dawn in a duel that ended with death for one and harsh criticism for the other?Judith St. George's lively biography, told in alternating chapters, brings to life two complex men who played major roles in the formation of the United States.

A short, educational, easy read and honestly quite entertaining! The Dual gives a behind the scenes look at the lives of the men behind the famed dual. It's really amazing to see how their lives had crossed so many times before that point and how they influenced the shaping of the American government.

This looked appealing... Next to Lin-Manuel Miranda's gorgeous Hamilton tome

MrBook Nice! 8y
Laalaleighh I've never been more obsessed with historical characters in my life. I would read anything Hamilton, Burr, Schuyler, Lafayette, Lawrence, or Mulligan now! 8y
BookishMarginalia @Laalaleighh Isn't it lovely to be so obsessed? Life is good 🤓 8y

Laalaleighh @BookishMarginalia tis a wonderful thing! 8y
Heretherebedragons @Laalaleighh If you're looking for more things to quench your Hamilton thirst, I highly recommend checking out "The History Chicks" podcast, Ep 71 on iTunes. It's about the Schuyler sisters and it's fascinating! (Plus, the biographer they interviewed is working on a book about them, which I can't wait to read). 8y
Laalaleighh @Heretherebedragons Well that is totally what I will be listening to at the gym!!! Thank you so much for the recommendation! And I can't wait to get my hands in a Schuyler biography either!!! 💃🏼 8y

Although I'm aware this book was written for younger audiences, it's supposed to be aimed at teens. It read more like a middle grade text, with an off combination of very general, passive passages sprinkled with exact quotes from primary sources. However, I did learn a lot about these 2 dudes, though 98% isn't about the infamous duel, despite what the title says.
Book 11 of my #24in48 #readathon stack done with 18:26 clocked.

ValerieAndBooks Is it a jump on the Hamilton Musical's coattails? 8y
Carol @ValerieAndBooks possibly from the publisher, because this was styled similar to the musical's artwork, though this book was actually published in 2009. If it was a writing rush job it wasn't because of Hamilton. 🤓 8y

A must for fans of the musical Hamilton. Told in the alternating viewpoints of Hamilton and Burr there is a lot of history packed into 89 pages. I did get a little bored with the battles and political fights scenes but they're not my jam. Definitely a good read.
