The Places In Between
The Places In Between | Rory Stewart
6 posts | 10 read | 19 to read
Rory Stewart's moving account of his walk across Afghanistan in January 2002 was immediately hailed as a classic. Caught between hostile nations, warring factions and competing ideologies, at the time Afghanistan was in turmoil following the US invasion. Travelling entirely on foot and following the inaccessible mountainous route once taken by the Mogul Emperor, Babur the Great, Stewart was nearly defeated by the extreme, hostile conditions. Only with the help of an unexpected companion and the generosity of the people he met on the way did he survive to report back with unique insight on a region closed to the world by twenty-four years of war. Winner of the Royal Society of Literature Ondaatje Award and the Spirit of Scotland Award and shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award, the John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize and the Scottish Book of the Year Prize.

Here's my April #bookspin & #doublespin list stack! I want to try to be more focused (which I never am) in a few leads this spring besides expand on my fantasy reading/author comparison, read more than one book by the same authors, read what I want to donate to LFLs. So I changed my list to reflect that.

@TheAromaofBooks

I asked a fellow reader to help me choose from my library some fast-paced spring and summer reads, since they asked.

TheAromaofBooks I've really been trying to focus on my own books so that some of them can get passed onto someone else. It's been great to get a few of them off the shelves!! 2y
tokorowilliamwallace Will I accomplish it? Not likely. But I need to try more often. I just keep starting new 500+ page books; and even the 2y

Day 9: #walking

I had to feature this book, which I always forget the title of and refer to simply as “the walking across Afghanistan book.” Fantastic stories from a reporter who traveled all the way across Afghanistan on foot and chronicles the people, places, and experiences he encounters. Absolutely riveting!

And so much walking!!

LeahBergen This was a great read! 👍🏻 6y

Sudden rainstorm forced us in Amsterdam's prettiest bookstore. Now that's what I call good weather.

#BonBonCat and #SeptimusCat supervise my picks for today's #ReadJanuary

Libby1 😻 7y
Zelma I never asked before but is Septimus named for the Mrs. Dalloway character, Septimus Heap, or someone entirely different? 7y
WanderingBookaneer @Zelma : I wish it were a literary name! Alas, it is not. The day I got him I realized he was our seventh cat and the name seem to fit. 7y
Zelma @WanderingBookaneer that works too! 7y

A few years ago I was obsessed with solo-travel novels. This was after watching "Lawrence of Arabia", Stewart's story is amazing and incredibly sweet. His adopted dog, the people he meets, the scenery he describes... Totally engrossing.
