A beautifully written book, full of one man‘s journal entries narrating his obsessive search for, and observations of, wintering peregrines in the marshy fenland of eastern England. Baker‘s keen eye teaches us patience and discernment, where we slowly learn to pick apart the beautiful patterns that underlie every wildlife scene: an activity so meditative and captivating, its hard to wrench yourself away as dusk falls at the end of each entry.

3⭐️ I love J.A. Baker‘s writing here.. his detailed observations and the landscape descriptions are lyrical, coming from someone who was obsessed with the peregrine. He followed the bird from Oct to Apr for 10 years that he and the bird became one thing. The journal entries are repetitive, and it requires perseverance to finish the book. As a friend of mine said, 5⭐️ for the writing, 1⭐️ for the reading experience 🪶

batsy Backdrop looks amazing! Perfect spot for this book, I'm thinking... 💙 1y
sisilia @batsy It is, indeed…. Too bad I dont have the audiobook as a companion. It‘s narrated by David Attenborough… perfect! 1y

Yesterday I bought a copy of The Peregrine and then went online to see who had recently written about it. The New Yorker ran an article in 2017 http://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/the-beauty-of-j-a-bakers-the-peregrin... and after reading that, I was reminded of Derek Walcott because he was referenced in the article. And then I spent a couple of hours this morning reading some of Wolcatt‘s poetry - which is amazing. #bookishsidetracks

vivastory I see that Werner Herzog blurbed it too! 3y
LauraBeth @vivastory he gave such a great interview explaining why he loves it so much: https://www.ttbook.org/interview/werner-herzog-peregrine 3y

Flashes of Baker and his paranoia/misanthropy illuminate the rest of this diary.

This book is incredibly weird. It's hard not to be entirely consumed by it, as Baker was by his hawks.

#marchintoreading day 23 - favorite last sentences

Picked this one up after I learned it was Werner Herzog's favorite book. For a book with little to no narrative, the ending of The Peregrine was very cathartic.

"There is one book I must ask you to read if you want to make films" - Werner Herzog.

Well if I wasn't excited to read The Peregrine before, I certainly am now.

MrBook Me too! Thanks for the share! 8y
CherylDeFranceschi Yay! I'm going to see the new Werner film tonight! Yay! 8y
PurityofEssence @MrBook let me know Whatchya think if ya wind up reading it. I'm thinking of doing a hawk marathon: The Peregrine, The Goshawk, H is for Hawk. There are probably more too lol. 8y

PurityofEssence @CherylDeFranceschi Hope ya like it! I won't spoil anything, but I thought Herzog was hilarious during the conversation about colonizing Mars. Those typically "Herzogian" moments are endlessly amusing to me; my favorite is in Encounters at the End of the World, when he asks: do penguins ever go insane? ? 8y
PurityofEssence @CherylDeFranceschi Btw, I should mention that I assumed you were talking about Lo and Behold; I keep forgetting that he has a new narrative film out this year as well. 8y
MrBook Niiice! Will do 😊👍🏻! 8y
Gezemice Interesting! Never heard of it before. 8y
