All of Us: The Collected Poems | Raymond Carver
14 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
This prodigiously rich collection suggests that Raymond Carver was not only Americas finest writer of short fiction, but also one of its most large-hearted and affecting poets. Like Carvers stories, the more than 300 poems in All of Us are marked by a keen attention to the physical world; an uncanny ability to compress vast feeling into discreet moments; a voice of conversational intimacy, and an unstinting sympathy. This complete edition brings together all the poems of Carvers five previous books, from Fires to the posthumously published No Heroics, Please. It also contains bibliographical and textual notes on individual poems; a chronology of Carvers life and work; and a moving introduction by Carvers widow, the poet Tess Gallagher. From the Trade Paperback edition.

While Carver is best known for his fiction, he wrote a great deal of poetry in his lifetime and this book gathers all the poems, including several not included in his published collections. Like his stories, his poems concern the domestic life, relationships, alcohol, and rivers. The collection charts his growth as a poet, particularly near the end of his life as he found love and happiness while also battling the cancer that killed him.

A great, if very sad at times, collection of his poems. Still, a great poet (if not so great a man maybe) gone too soon.

I'm really frustrated with my poetry class. They are constantly judging and antagonizing . I just keep thinking that if Raymond Carver was my professor, he would tell them that they are not all that. I'm in a bad mood tonight.

I'm really enjoying his collection of poems. Raymond Carver makes me believe that poetry can be beautiful if it's personal, not totally understood and simple all at the same time. I'm struggling with my poetry class because the other students want everything to be known within a poem and I don't agree. There can be some mystery. Poetry is ultimately subjective.

Sometimes in the middle of reading a novel I'll take a short break and read some poetry. A poetic intermission while I head to the concession stand.
