Being Wrong
Being Wrong: Adventures in the Margin of Error | Kathryn Schulz
10 posts | 9 read | 27 to read
To err is human. Yet most of us go through life assuming (and sometimes insisting) that we are right about nearly everything, from the origins of the universe to how to load the dishwasher. In Being Wrong, journalist Kathryn Schulz explores why we find it so gratifying to be right and so maddening to be mistaken. Drawing on thinkers as varied as Augustine, Darwin, Freud, Gertrude Stein, Alan Greenspan, and Groucho Marx, she shows that error is both a given and a gift—one that can transform our worldviews, our relationships, and ourselves.

I feel like this explains a lot.

(Why has Litsy started magnifying photos such that they don't quite fit?? Is this happening to anyone else? 😟)

Ruthiella I‘ve not noticed that? 🤔 3w

Loved this book. It was funny, insightful, cleverly written, and a quick read, thanks to Ms. Schulz's writing skills. It has helped me evaluate my own perception and be more patient with others' views when they seem so wildly different from my own.

merelybookish Lots of great choices! I taught that Schlutz book in Freshman comp one year. One of the students later wrote on an eval it went against her Catholic education. 5y
Graywacke @merelybookish ok, 1) wow on that student ...but I guess it actually makes some sense. And 2) fascinated that you taught this. This books thinks the way I think. It should be taught to accountants who don‘t really understand the technical side of their business 🙂 5y

merelybookish @Graywacke I thought it was a good orientation to learning, to be open to making mistakes and being wrong. Unless you're Catholic, I guess. 😉 5y
britt_brooke Great picks! I should‘ve assigned a hashtag initially, but didn‘t realize it would take off like it did, so yours sounds good. 😉 5y
Graywacke @merelybookish Yes... I really like how you expressed it there. 🙂 5y
Graywacke @britt_brooke A good fire you started. It was fun to think about, and fun to read others posts. 5y

I finished this audiobook yesterday and really enjoyed it! Nothing totally groundbreaking, but very interesting anecdotes and research into wrongness... a lot of which explains a great deal about the current political climate. #jesshowreads2018

Lol! I've already highlighted about 4 passages in this book. I did not expect to enjoy it this much! (Book club pick)

AlaMich Ha!! "I was right about being right." ?? I'm pretty sure that thought has crossed my mind about eleventy billion times in my life. Needing to be right is one trait I would LOVE to be cured of. 6y
howjessicareads @AlaMich - ditto. 😩 This book is really interesting so far though! About the disconnect between how we all think we're right all the time, but how often we're actually wrong (and how to deal with that). 6y

Starting reading this a couple of weeks ago. It's pretty good. A little hard to keep focused sometimes (but you don't want to miss the little slips of humour)

Being Wrong.... Pretty much the title of my life's book. I used this one for one of the other challenges. But it just seems so appropriate! #24in48
