A fantastic collaboration between the masterful James Baldwin and his friend, the artist, Yoran Cazac! Baldwin wrote this for his nephew. While a celebration of growing up in Harlem in the 1970‘s, the themes are serious. The book has been called an “adult” children‘s book. Cazac‘s watercolor illustrations are marvelous, particularly since he had never visited Harlem. Thanks to the #authoramonth challenge, I enjoyed this treasure. @Soubhiville

Only finished two of James Baldwin‘s books this month. I had read two others in the past. The adult children‘s book was a surprise. I have become more and more impressed with James Baldwin‘s talent and heart with each book that I read.

Thank you @Soubhiville for encouraging me to read more of his body of work.

Baldwin never had kids but he had lots of nieces and nephews-at some point they begged him to write a book for kids! This story celebrates and explores the challenges and joys of black childhood in Harlem. The illustrations are perfection.
